Fit at any age

While you can’t truly have the body of a 20 year old when you’re 50 (although there are certainly enough cosmetic procedures that’ll try to get you there) you can so be as fit as a 20-something when you’re 50 years old, according to a study conducted at K.G. Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine.

Fitness is determined more by your level of activity than your age, the study found.

(something I come across all the time — the grey haired folks outpacing me in a race, doh!)

Age gracefully? Sure, by working out a storm to maintain your health — that sounds like the best plan.

Is being a night owl making you fat?

In new findings published in Obesity, people who hit the sack late tend to:

  • consume 248 more calories a day
  • eat fewer fruits and veggies and more fast food
  • drink more soft drinks
  • all of which can lead to gaining an extra two lbs per month

(Being a late sleeper in this study meant your midpoint of sleep came after 5:30AM btw).

Yikes. Guess who’s going to bed earlier starting tonight!

With no TV, we wouldn’t necessarily exercise more

TV is linked to so many unhealthy things (for making you feel less satisfied with life and increasing your risk of heart disease), so I found this research from Ohio State University interesting: while TV’s often seen as evil, our favourite TV shows can play an important role in our lives.

Say if Mad Men were to go off the air? For some of us who have developed a strong connection to characters, this would be particularly distressing. And the study found it’s not as though we’d be likely to start being more socially and physically active. In fact, we’re more likely to start watching reruns of the show or surf the net.
