Will Wii Fit get you fit?

Fitness games provide 322% more calorie burn than resting. Dance games slightly less (298%). These two stats come from a study published online in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

And in study published online in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dance Dance Revolution played at a moderate to vigorous level causes your body to use up more oxygen than 3mph treadmill walking.

    I do think it’s funny that they are comparing it to rest. Wouldn’t any movement burn more than rest?

    The stats they quoted earlier in the article comparing to 3mph treadmill use was more compelling. Now they just have to do a comparison of Fitness video games and Reebox Tone Shaper things. I would probably buy which ever came out as best. But I’m gullible like that.

    Ha ha, very true!

    Do you mean the Reebok EasyTone shoes? I’m guessing such a study would work out in favour of the Easytones, since you’d use those in your day to day life, versus playing an exergame. That’s all in my very unscientific opinion 🙂

    I’m still testing mine out — will update once I’ve given them a good trial!

    I agree with Leila — I’d like to know how washing dishes, for example, compares to rest. That would give me a better feel for these stats.

    However, I also have to admit that I own a Wii Fit AND a fitness game for my xbox Kinect. So I’m totally a sucker anyway 😉

    And do you use them to work out? I’ve always been curious as to how effective these exergames are in terms of people committing to them as their main source of exercise.

    I’m less critical of the studies comparing them to rest because I think I see these games as replacing sitting on the couch (versus replacing real exercise)…
