Will Wii Fit get you fit?

Fitness games provide 322% more calorie burn than resting. Dance games slightly less (298%). These two stats come from a study published online in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

And in study published online in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dance Dance Revolution played at a moderate to vigorous level causes your body to use up more oxygen than 3mph treadmill walking.

Game on.

Will exergaming whip your bod into shape?

Have you put Dance Central for Xbox Kinect or Nintendo Wii Fit on your wish list for Santa, hoping it’ll get you skinny jean-worthy?

This New York Times article says you shouldn’t get your hopes up about these games slimming you down, that you don’t exert yourself nearly as much as you would actually playing a sport.

(sigh)

Although you do burn more energy  than you would just watching Scrooged and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation parked on your sofa. Plus, the games keep you way be too busy dancing or playing virtual soccer to be snacking on chips and holiday treats.

So keep it on your list–and if Santa grants your gaming wish, be sure to invite me over for your next games night. 🙂
