Why you should drink organic milk

January 17, 2011

A new study from Newcastle University published in the Journal of Dairy Science found that organic milk contains more essential fatty acids than conventional milk–seems like an easy switch to make to get more CLAs and omega-3s in your diet.

(now if only milk were still packaged as quaintly as in the photo above from artist Scott Moore–I think I’d be more inclined to drink more of it…)

I remember going to school in Scotland and at 11 am every day someone bringing a crate of glass milk bottles into the classroom. You stuck a straw through the cream to drink up the milk from underneath – or some crazy kids just shook up the bottle and drank the whole thing. I don’t know if they were organic but with a whole bottle every day (ok they were a bit smaller than these) I’m sure we were getting our healthy fatty acids all right :)

Oh my gosh, you totally reminded me that I was the sucker who had to be the milk monitor in my class! Somehow I got wrangled into the gig (OK, maybe I was teacher’s pet, but this was one job I did not want!), which meant I had to arrive early, go to the giant freezer and and lug a crate of milk cartons back to class for everyone.

In this case, I’m kinda glad it wasn’t bottles like yours I had to haul back to the classroom (although it woulda been quite the workout!). :)

That’s funny, Karen! I think our school made an adult do it. Hey, you were strengthening your bones two ways :)

    True.

I guess they believed in child labour in my elementary school…
