Mommy dearest

An early wakeup call, long lines at customs and security, followed by my flight being delayed by two hours, which made me miss my connection, resulting in a six-hour wait in the airport for the next available flight, all has me stressing out big time (oh, and did a mention that I think I lost my cell phone somewhere along the way, too?).

According to new research, a phone call with my mom may help by triggering the release of stress-diminishing hormone oxytocin, helping to calm my frayed nerves.

Which is a strategy I’d consider right now…if I had my cell phone handy.

-sigh-

Material girl

Photo: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Remember the study that found the spending money on experiential purchases makes you happier than buying the latest Louboutins (well, technically the study focused on material items, not just to-die-for shoes — that’s just how I’d choose to splurge…)?

There’s now a new study led by the University of Colarado at Boulder that has found that people who choose to pursue happiness through material means are less liked than their peers than people who seek happiness from life experiences.

So it seems that when it comes to popularity contests and your happiness quotient, you’ll win in both respects by getting out there and living your life rather than filling your closet à la Shopaholic Becky Bloomwood.

Although I still firmly believe there’s a place for both — it’s all about balance. 🙂

Clubbing days

Did you head home for Easter weekend and get all wound up thanks to your folks and family drama? Were you wishing you could find some zen while you were there?

If you travel a ton (or just want to take your at-home yoga practice to the next level) the Gaiam Yoga Club will have you performing chaturanga better than ever.

Developed by Colleen  Saidman and Rodney Yee (one of my personal favourites when it comes to yoga teachers on DVD — I like his calm, soothing manner and A.M. Yoga for Your Week is in regular rotation for my home-based training), this 12-week online training program costs $5/week and offers nine hours of videos that guide you through 75 poses and over 60 downloadable audiocasts, not to mention of course the 12 weeks of yoga classes — which you do at your own pace (ie. if you’re not practicing weekly, the program will last you longer than the three months).

I think the club is perfect for jetsetters looking to keep up with their sun salutations while on the road (like when at home with the ‘rents) — it’s not always easy to find a yoga class when you’re in another city that fits your schedule and location. As a GYC member, if you’ve got your laptop (and an internet connection), you’re all set.
