Have a breakfast that packs some protein

My new favourite breakfast is Greek yogurt with some granola or fruit. And I love when I come across some research that backs up any healthy new habit I’ve picked up:

Kicking off your day with a healthy breakfast, in particular one that is protein-rich (Greek yogurt is high in protein btw), helps cut down your food cravings and prevent overeating later on in the day, as shown in University of Missouri research.

(It also helps control reward-driven eating behaviour, apparently. And I say apparently as some of you may recall the cupcakes I had on Sunday after my race. Whatevs–I stand by my decision. 21.1k and a personal best, I deserve cupcakes, darn it! :)

Greek yogurt with berries and nuts, SkinnyTaste.

What to eat after you exercise

I’d run 16k that morning and was tired and a bit woozy in the afternoon when I interviewed Sarah Maughan for this thatsfit.ca story. And as we chatted, I discovered why I was feeling so out of sorts.

Don’t do the Dukan…

…say researchers at the Institut Pasteur in France, as it’ll mess up your natural metabolism and lead to nutritional imbalances. According to their research, the Dukan diet (fans of which include Gisele Bundchen and Jennifer Lopez) is much higher in protein than the RDA and too low in fibre in the initial two stages, amongst other shortcomings.

A well-balanced, varied diet is the way to go, they say.

And for an even better combo for melting off extra weight, throw some exercise into the mix, too–and you can keep up that pic of JLo on your fridge as your inspiration even if you’re ditching the Dukan diet. She works out regularly personal trainer with Gunnar Peterson, not to mention completing a triathlon in ’08.
