Skinny Monkey

January 18, 2010

A healthy homemade version of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream? That’s got my name all over it! The recipe for Homemade Banana Ice Cream in Healthy Sin Foods tastes super close to B&J’s (just more banana-y — its main ingredient is frozen bananas, after all) but without the guilt of digging into a pint of the original.

When you compare a half cup serving of Shulman’s Homemade Banana Ice Cream with Chunky Monkey, her homemade version serves up 234 calories and 6 grams of total fat compared to 290 calories and 17 grams of fat you get in the latter.

(Note: I substituted a couple of spoonfuls of semisweet chocolate chips for the chocolate sauce Shulman suggests in the recipe. I’ve just never been much of a fan of chocolate sauce and I doubt the switch altered the nutrition of the dessert too much).

To get the recipe, you’ll have to pick up the book (I only obtained permission from the publisher to share the squash soup recipe). Add it to your bookshelf  if you’re interested in a detailed breakdown on the top 50 superfoods, along with helpful tips on storage, research findings and the like, and, of course, the super satisfying healthy recipes I’ve already mentioned.
