Running tip of the week

March 4, 2011

Tips from my weekly half-marathon clinic. This week naturopathic doctor Alexandra Mason from Totum Life Science spoke to the group about digestive health and this is what I gleaned from what my running buddy shared with me (I’m currently out of town).

Reason #1 to run: Moderate exercise is beneficial to our immune system and the medical community looks to runners to obtain these stats.  When you run, in addition to endorphins your body also produces seratonin and dopamine (feel-good hormones) and they are enhanced when you run, which is why runners feel good.

Reason #2 to run: Both hormones also help your immune system fight off sickness which is why runners and other avid exercisers are sick less often than people who are more sedentary.
Reason #3 to run: Running and avid exercising can release ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which increases levels of anti-inflammatory hormones into our system.!
