Your job can make you fat

April 6, 2010

If there’ve been layoffs at your company, leaving you and the few remaining staff with a heavier workload, keep an eye on your waistline as your skinny jeans may be fitting a bit snugger.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester School of Medicine found that of employees in an upstate New York company that had been downsized, those with higher job stress (suffering from chronic stress thanks to being saddled with more responsibilities) were fatter than those with less stressful positions (whose short-term stress revolved more around job insecurity).

The researchers speculate that one cause may be that the highly stressed out employees tend to lean towards unhealthy lifestyle habits when they’re so tired and frazzled from work, so for example, they may head home after a long day at the office and just veg out in front of the TV every night instead of getting some exercise in.
