The more complex the diet, the more likely you’ll quit it

January 14, 2010

The old adage “Where there’s a will there’s a way,” doesn’t quite apply to diets. Research conducted by cognitive scientists at Indiana University and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development has revealed that the more complicated dieters think their weight-loss plan is, the sooner they are likely to drop the diet (and, as a result, not the pounds). So it’s not only about willpower when it comes to sticking to your diet.

Which doesn’t bode well for my bestie who’s counting out olives and almonds and green veggies for every single snack and meal. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m still rooting for her!)

I once managed to cut sugary stuff out of my diet by eating nothing but All-Bran for three days straight. It has sugar in it, I realize, but I went that route simply because I couldn’t handle having to think about what to eat instead of all the other stuff I couldn’t. It worked actually — I began a much healthier meal plan after those three days, partly because veggies and healthy protein was so much more appealing than All-Bran!

Good luck to your friend :-)

The site looks great, Karen — well done. Congrats.

    1) YOU ROCK Karen!
    2) Happy new year, I wish we lived just a tad closer :)
    3) I completely agree — I recently read Jillian Michael’s newest book — and it was turning point for me… she said quite simply — Don’t eat anything that did not come from the earth or ocean or either had a mother or comes from something that has a mother.
HAHAHA! I know — strange — but her point is simple: every time you go to put something in your mouth, think about that — if its man-made/refined, has processed sugars, a shelf life, corn surup or additives you can not pronounce… DON’T eat it… it really simplified my life :)

Keep it simple. Exercise and healthy eating is the key. I have done most diets and they only end up doing the reverse of what you want and deflating your self esteem. Often times people diet but do no or little exercise. Diets simply assist you to lose weight, and you often end up putting more back on.

If a healthy lifestyle is what you’re after, most diets aren’t what you’re looking for. A healthy eating routine as well as a personal trainer to guide your cardio, strength and conditioning training will get you results you will cherish. Instead of counting the pounds you lose and stepping on a scale every morning, you will pump up your metabolism, find your clothes begin to fall off you and build strength and muscle.
