Is being a night owl making you fat?

In new findings published in Obesity, people who hit the sack late tend to:

  • consume 248 more calories a day
  • eat fewer fruits and veggies and more fast food
  • drink more soft drinks
  • all of which can lead to gaining an extra two lbs per month

(Being a late sleeper in this study meant your midpoint of sleep came after 5:30AM btw).

Yikes. Guess who’s going to bed earlier starting tonight!

Quit your soda habit

If you love the fizzy bubbly as much as Zohan does, you have want to have a good look at what food you’re eating and make some improvements: Those who adore soda pop appear to also eat less healthy diets, according to findings published in Hypertension.

Need reasons to cut down on your soda habit? The study found that soda drinkers:

  • consume less calcium, magnesium and potassium
  • tend to have increased blood pressure
  • and if your high sugar consumption is paired with high salt consumption, you’re more likely to develop heart problems

High-fructose corn syrup by any other name…

…would still be linked to obesity.

The peeps behind high-fructose corn syrup want the FDA to OK them rebranding it as corn sugar–those clever marketers them. I love Christopher Wanjek’s take on how “natural” high-fructose corn syrup is.

As for how you should approach HFCS when it comes to how you eat and drink? Well, I know of an American who makes a point of buying their soft drinks in Canada and lugging it back across the border because us Canadians apparently have access to some healthy soft drinks. Um–I haven’t investigated the ingredients in our pop (does ours not have HFCS? I don’t know) But c’mon! I’m sorry, a soft drink is still a soft drink and as far as I know, us Canucks don’t have a special healthy stash of it.

Really, use your common sense…and if you’re not sure what a common-sense approach would be, check the tips detailed here by the Mayo Clinic.
