Strengthen your bones with dried plums

I don’t get enough dairy in my diet, pretty certain of that (copious servings of Haagen Dazs I’ve had this week don’t count) so this finding caught my attention:

Eating dried plums — yes, prunes (but doesn’t dried plums sound better?) — can help prevent osteoporosis and fractures. Seems that dried plums help suppress bone breakdown. So guess what I’m stocking up on?

OK, the Florida State University study was conducted with post-menopausal women,a group I am not a part of, but I figure it couldn’t hurt.

And, anyhow, at least I’ll be nice and regular.

Health-boosting tomatoes

This goes out to all the tomato haters out there–you may want to start eating more of this veg (yes, I know technically it’s a fruit) asap:

A review by the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine has found that eating more lycopene-rich tomatoes makes you healthier and cut the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Daily D recommendations

Make sure you never miss a dose by taking your supplements with you. For short getaways, I love this super cute and practical Vitamin Pod from My Tagalongs ($5)

Osteoporosis Canada has come out with new vitamin D recommendations: daily supplements of 400 to 1000 IU for adults under age 50 without osteoporosis or conditions affecting vitamin D absorption. For those 50+, supplements of between 800 and 2000 IU are recommended.
