Beauty Swellness: Art-deco-y Vancouver Marathon manicure

Vancouver Marathon manicure

Nail-job craving: For my third (what!) marathon, this Sunday in Vancouver, I wasn’t thinking themed (like my Las Vegas half-marathon Strip at Night mani) or neon (my usual go-to for running a race, like my nails for the Toronto Women’s Half-marathon). I just wanted something stylish that would make me feel good. Cuz when I hit those last five kilometres or so, I’ll need anything and everything to help me feel better.

How I satisfied that craving: After a quick brainstorm with Leeanne Colley at Tips Nail Bar, we decided on a graphic design created with a mix of triangles. It’s a little bit Art Deco, but the colours and the graphicness also makes me think of the Aztec prints I love from Mara Hoffman, like this dress.

I let Leeanne choose the colours, and here’s what her crazy good artistic nail mind chose: the new pale pink Entity gel polish as the base, followed by four regular nail polishes meticulously painted on by her (and Naomi pitched in, too): Revlon in Posh (green), CND in Anchor Blue (blue), China Glaze in Surreal Appeal (coral) and Recycle (grey).

How it makes me feel: Like I might miss out on Vancouver’s gorgeousness as I run through the city because I’ll be too busy mani-gazing. In fact, I might even miss Channing Tatum waiting for me at the finish line, tee hee.

Love it or hate it: Love. In fact, let’s have a look at both hands…

Beauty Swellness: How to apply Revlon’s Moon Candy

Revlon Moon Candy in Orbit

Nail-job craving: With no gel nail polish on, I’ve simply been going through my bucket of nail polish and trying all the ones I haven’t had a chance to yet. This time around, I didn’t feel like anything pastel (which was the first bottle I spotted), and then came upon sparkly number I’ve been curious about…

How I satisfied that craving: With Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy in Orbit (one end is a deep purple, which when on looked almost navy) and the other end is an iridescent lavender in the bottle with large opalescent flakes.

How this nail colour make me feel: Conflicted. I was quite thrilled with how my nails looked with just one coat of the dark purple shade (the polish went on beautifully, giving lots of coverage with just one coat). But then I added the flakey opalescent polish on top and it made my polish job look messy. The flakes were not lying flat, making my nails look goopy.

Love it or hate it: I love the idea of what Moon Candy is supposed to look like so I gave Revlon Nail Expert Leeanne Colley a shout to find out what I could’ve done better (in other words, how she would’ve done it).

Leeanne Colley’s tips on how to apply Revlon Moon Candy:

  • “There’s lot of pigment in the solid colour, so be sure to give the one coat of the solid colour — that’s probably all you’ll need to apply — lots of time to dry or else the glitter from the second colour will sink into the first polish if it’s not completely dry and you’ll get more of that topsy turvy look.”
  • With the bottle closed, tip and shake the glitter side of the bottle upside down so that the product all rises to the top of the bottle. “Then, take the brush and swipe alongside the bottle opening so almost all of the product is removed,” says Leeanne. Using the brush, go back into the bottle and pick up with the bristles the pieces of glitter (they’ll be concentrated at the top of the enamel given the shaking you did beforehand). “Lightly pat down the pieces of glitter where you want them, and then your nails should dry pretty quickly since you’re applying very little enamel in this step,” she says.
  • If you want a more textured feel, skip a top coat, but if you want a smoother finish, apply a layer of topcoat to finish your manicure.

The Nail Report: The Las Vegas light-show edition

Nail-job craving: I was sad to say goodbye to my sexy, leathery Revlon nails…but I had to get a half-marathon manicure for running the Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half-Marathon this Sunday. I told Leeanne Colley at Tips Nail Bar three weeks ago about the race, and she started brainstorming.

How I satisfied that craving: To be honest, Leeanne and I struggled a bit. I mean, there are lots of things synonomous with Vegas…but not much I’d want to actually wear on my nails (Dice, for example? Corny.). I want stylish, not tacky, after all. We googled images and chatted and the main thing I think of when it comes to Vegas are all the lights on the Strip, and Leeanne came across a picture of a concert with the effects of a light show and we both thought it’d work well as a graphic nail, so here’s how she replicated it on my nails —

She applied Artistic Color Gloss in Wham, a blue, on tips of my nails and then Shellac in Black Pool on the bottom half. Then overtop of the Wham, she applied CND Addititives in Cerulean Blue and then sealed all of that in with a topcoat. Using China Glaze in In the Limelight, she carefully painted on the “lasers” using a thin brush.

How this nail colour makes me feel: Like I’ve got my own little light show on my fingertips. (Oh, btw, if you follow me on Twitter, Leeanne was semi-joking about applying battery-operated lights onto my hands and nails…but how cool would that be?! I totally got right onto google looking for tiny, adhesive LEDs that would work for this purpose…alas, no such lights exist, not that I could find anyhow).

Love it or hate it: Love. But I can’t get the J Lo song “Waiting for Tonight” outta my head (remember the light show in that video?). The nail totally works with the “Strip at Night” theme of the race.
