How to resist junk food

Focus on thinking about your health and you’re more likely to choose something healthy to eat even if it’s not something you find delicious. In a California Institute of Techonology study, people who are told to think about healthiness were more likely to turn down junk food even if it is something they find tasty.

Kinda wish I’d known this before I went to stock up on M&M, Big Feet and Fuzzy Peaches to snack on during my 20 hours of travel time… Ah, who’s kidding who, I’d still have gotten the candy. Celery sticks would only make the looooong flight even harder to bear.

Deadly TV

A typical evening include an episode of The Voice and The Good  Wife? Two hours of telly daily is enough to kill you early, says research from the Harvard School of Public Health. More precisely, for every 120 minutes of television watching per day ups your chance of dying before age 65 by 13 percent.

Seems that this is likely due to planting ourselves in front of the tube instead of exercising, and that we tend to eat junk food and drink while doing so.

(On another note — anyone else watching The Voice solely for Adam Levine?)

Make it cash money

It’s all about the Benjamins, baby, if you’re trying to stick to a healthy, balanced diet.

(Actually, in Canada I suppose I should be saying it’s all about Sir Robert Borden–but I didn’t think anyone would get the reference.)

Paying in cold hard cash–versus debit or credit–at the supermarket may help you stick to a  healthier diet, says a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. It seems we find it more painful to pay for products with cash, and so we’re less likely to fill our carts with foods that are junky when doling out actual dollars the register.
