Beauty Swellness: CND Vinylux Weekly Polish System review

image

CND has just launched a new nail polish, Vinylux Weekly Polish System. That’s right, it’s a polish you apply at home, that you don’t cure under a lamp, and is said to last seven days.

Seven days.
Considering regular polish typically lasts less than one day on me without chipping, I was super keen to test it out, and Leeanne of Tips Nail Bar generously had me come in to see her to try it.
In typical Leeanne fashion, she knew exactly what colour I was in the mood for. Is there such thing as mani ESP, cuz if so she’s got it. We went with a pale grey called Cityscapes.
There’s no base coat for Vinylux btw. Leeanne applied three coats of Cityscapes (two was sufficient but she wanted to ensure the colour was solid) and then the topcoat, which features Prolight Technology (ie. it cures in natural light). No lamp, just a short wait as Vinylux dries in 8.5 minutes.
I left Tips, a happy camper with pretty, shiny nails…and then this happened:

Not even 10 minutes after leaving the salon, I’d dented my thumb when I went to pay for the takeout I’d bought for lunch. So lesson #1: the polish may dry to the touch in 8.5 minutes but you still need to be careful with your nails because that doesn’t mean it’s 100% dried.
Besides this, my nails looked great until day five, when I noticed a strange sort of sinking back of the polish on my thumb. I showed Leeanne who said this possibly stemmed from a bubble during application.

Then day six, chippage action on many nails.

All in all, pretty good results. I’m impressed. I consider it lasting six days longer than any other polish I’ve tried. Is it a game changer? I’ll have to test out how well it performs when I apply it myself, that’ll be a truer test–see how it performs with my very average polish application skills. Stay tuned for the post!
CND Vinylux Weekly Polish, available in 62 colours. $12 each.

Beauty Swellness: Art-deco-y Vancouver Marathon manicure

Vancouver Marathon manicure

Nail-job craving: For my third (what!) marathon, this Sunday in Vancouver, I wasn’t thinking themed (like my Las Vegas half-marathon Strip at Night mani) or neon (my usual go-to for running a race, like my nails for the Toronto Women’s Half-marathon). I just wanted something stylish that would make me feel good. Cuz when I hit those last five kilometres or so, I’ll need anything and everything to help me feel better.

How I satisfied that craving: After a quick brainstorm with Leeanne Colley at Tips Nail Bar, we decided on a graphic design created with a mix of triangles. It’s a little bit Art Deco, but the colours and the graphicness also makes me think of the Aztec prints I love from Mara Hoffman, like this dress.

I let Leeanne choose the colours, and here’s what her crazy good artistic nail mind chose: the new pale pink Entity gel polish as the base, followed by four regular nail polishes meticulously painted on by her (and Naomi pitched in, too): Revlon in Posh (green), CND in Anchor Blue (blue), China Glaze in Surreal Appeal (coral) and Recycle (grey).

How it makes me feel: Like I might miss out on Vancouver’s gorgeousness as I run through the city because I’ll be too busy mani-gazing. In fact, I might even miss Channing Tatum waiting for me at the finish line, tee hee.

Love it or hate it: Love. In fact, let’s have a look at both hands…

Beauty Swellness: The Nail Report: My bouncy “marathon” manicure

I ran the Around the Bay 30k race in Hamilton yesterday, but priorities, ladies. First things first (my race report can wait!) — what did my nails look like for the race!?

Nail-job craving: As always, I want something fun and energetic for running a race. Given that I was in Barbados until late Friday, I actually didn’t think I was going to be able to get a manicure at Tips Nail Bar for the race, but the idea was depressing me. I was particularly stressed about this race and the idea of it going horribly AND not at least having an awesome manicure was givin’ me mega anxiety (I know, those are some real problems I am faced with…feel my pain). A panicked text to Tips’ Leeanne Colley and we figured out I could come in Saturday morning (you know, rather than sleep and rest for race, I’m up early to get my nails done!).

How I satisfied that craving: Naomi and Leeanne both worked on my nails btw. I liked this racerback-esque look I’d seen — and for colours and application this is how the ladies created the look: Shellac in Cream Puff (the white) all over the base of the nail, then the hot pink semi-circles in Artistic Color Gloss in Owned, followed by the nude Artistic Color Gloss called Posh.

How this nail colour make me feel: My friend took one look at my nails and said “Bouncy!” which is exactly how they look (tennis ball-esque, non?) and feel to me!

Love it or hate it: Love. My bouncy nails helped me bounce happily to the finish line!
