Beauty Swellness: The Nail Report

Heat Index

Nail-job craving: Bright. Been wearing more neutral clothing lately so I like the pop of colour on my nails.

How I satisfied that craving: China Glaze in Heat Index — the name just spoke to me given the recent heat wave in Toronto.

How this nail colour makes me feel: Awake. Which is good because the heat always makes me sooooo sluggish.

Love it or hate it: Love, although it goes on a bit sheer so it took a few coats to get the opacity I wanted. I’m curious to try it with a white polish as a base; it’d probably make this neon pink pop even more.

And…have you voted for me yet today? With just a click — that’s all it takes — you can help me win a major grant that’ll help me reach a big, big, seemingly impossible goal I have…you can read about my goal here, and then click the big ol’ red “VOTE” box, too!

Beauty Swellness: Art-deco-y Vancouver Marathon manicure

Vancouver Marathon manicure

Nail-job craving: For my third (what!) marathon, this Sunday in Vancouver, I wasn’t thinking themed (like my Las Vegas half-marathon Strip at Night mani) or neon (my usual go-to for running a race, like my nails for the Toronto Women’s Half-marathon). I just wanted something stylish that would make me feel good. Cuz when I hit those last five kilometres or so, I’ll need anything and everything to help me feel better.

How I satisfied that craving: After a quick brainstorm with Leeanne Colley at Tips Nail Bar, we decided on a graphic design created with a mix of triangles. It’s a little bit Art Deco, but the colours and the graphicness also makes me think of the Aztec prints I love from Mara Hoffman, like this dress.

I let Leeanne choose the colours, and here’s what her crazy good artistic nail mind chose: the new pale pink Entity gel polish as the base, followed by four regular nail polishes meticulously painted on by her (and Naomi pitched in, too): Revlon in Posh (green), CND in Anchor Blue (blue), China Glaze in Surreal Appeal (coral) and Recycle (grey).

How it makes me feel: Like I might miss out on Vancouver’s gorgeousness as I run through the city because I’ll be too busy mani-gazing. In fact, I might even miss Channing Tatum waiting for me at the finish line, tee hee.

Love it or hate it: Love. In fact, let’s have a look at both hands…

The Nail Report: The Las Vegas light-show edition

Nail-job craving: I was sad to say goodbye to my sexy, leathery Revlon nails…but I had to get a half-marathon manicure for running the Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half-Marathon this Sunday. I told Leeanne Colley at Tips Nail Bar three weeks ago about the race, and she started brainstorming.

How I satisfied that craving: To be honest, Leeanne and I struggled a bit. I mean, there are lots of things synonomous with Vegas…but not much I’d want to actually wear on my nails (Dice, for example? Corny.). I want stylish, not tacky, after all. We googled images and chatted and the main thing I think of when it comes to Vegas are all the lights on the Strip, and Leeanne came across a picture of a concert with the effects of a light show and we both thought it’d work well as a graphic nail, so here’s how she replicated it on my nails —

She applied Artistic Color Gloss in Wham, a blue, on tips of my nails and then Shellac in Black Pool on the bottom half. Then overtop of the Wham, she applied CND Addititives in Cerulean Blue and then sealed all of that in with a topcoat. Using China Glaze in In the Limelight, she carefully painted on the “lasers” using a thin brush.

How this nail colour makes me feel: Like I’ve got my own little light show on my fingertips. (Oh, btw, if you follow me on Twitter, Leeanne was semi-joking about applying battery-operated lights onto my hands and nails…but how cool would that be?! I totally got right onto google looking for tiny, adhesive LEDs that would work for this purpose…alas, no such lights exist, not that I could find anyhow).

Love it or hate it: Love. But I can’t get the J Lo song “Waiting for Tonight” outta my head (remember the light show in that video?). The nail totally works with the “Strip at Night” theme of the race.
