Fitness Swellness: Walking equal to running

20130408-212039.jpg
Great news for those of you who prefer walking to running: Walking moderately intensely gives you comparable health benefits as running vigorously says a six-year study when it comes to reducing your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

(And while I know there are surely better walking shoes out there, ones designed for walking specifically, than these Nike Dunks, these are the sneaks I’m coveting and what I’d wear to walk to meetings and events. Cute, right?)

Just peachy

(Peach, Ontario Tender Fruit

We’re about four to six weeks away before peaches (and other stone fruit such as  plums and nectarines) are in season here, but when they are, if you need another reason to gobble ‘em up, check this out:

Stone fruit have bioactive compounds that potentially help battle off metabolic syndrome, says new research from Texas Agrilife Research. Metabolic syndrome is a collection of conditions that include high blood presssure, high blood sugar levels, excess belly fat and high cholesterol (which in combination can raise your risk of diabetes, stroke or heart attack).

One of my all-time favourite summer salads is Jamie Oliver’s roast peach and Parma ham salad (except I’m usually lazy and skip roasting the peaches). And now having been to Parma, Italy, it will hold an even more special place in my heart (and belly! Yummers!).

Exercise and salt’s effect on your blood pressure

A high-salt diet will raise your blood pressure. But the more physically active you are, the less your blood pressure will rise, says new findings from researchers at Tulane School of Medicine.

The takeaway? As much as I’d like it to be “I’m fit and active! Bring on the potato chips!” (I’ll take any reason that’ll justify my potato chip addiction), it’s that more exercise and a diet that’s easy on the salt is way to go.
