Running tip of the week

Tips from my weekly half-marathon clinic. This week naturopathic doctor Alexandra Mason from Totum Life Science spoke to the group about digestive health and this is what I gleaned from what my running buddy shared with me (I’m currently out of town).

Reason #1 to run: Moderate exercise is beneficial to our immune system and the medical community looks to runners to obtain these stats.  When you run, in addition to endorphins your body also produces seratonin and dopamine (feel-good hormones) and they are enhanced when you run, which is why runners feel good.

Reason #2 to run: Both hormones also help your immune system fight off sickness which is why runners and other avid exercisers are sick less often than people who are more sedentary.
Reason #3 to run: Running and avid exercising can release ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which increases levels of anti-inflammatory hormones into our system.!

Chocolate, better than super fruits?

Oh, this is going to make you chocoholics out there happy. Coincidentally, these findings were conducted by the Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition and come just in time with Valentine’s Day next week:

Dark chocolate and cocoa contains more antioxidants, polyphenols and flavanols than fruit juice, according to new research published in Chemistry Central Journal.

The healthiest eaters

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who are the healthiest eaters of us all?

Turns out childless couples are the healthiest eaters, consuming 4.4 lbs of fruits and veggies more per person per two-week period, according to a new study published in European Review of Agricultural Economics.

(And that reusable shopping bag above? In my effort to eat more veggies myself, I’m thinking I need to get me one of those–it’s like a readymade shopping list!).
