On your health to-do list: Get a bra fitting

November 24, 2010

Wearing an underwire bra does not give you breast cancer. That’s an urban myth that continues to make the rounds.

However, wearing the wrong size bra (which apparently includes up to 80 percent of women) will cause some health issues–back, neck or shoulder pain; rashes or skin irritation; your circulation may also be affected. And these symptoms are exacerbated even further the bigger your bosom is.

So add a bra fitting to your health checklist, or better yet book one pronto. I get it–having some strange lady eyeballing your boobies and maybe even pulling and prodding at straps as you model an array of bras for her isn’t exactly a tea party but hey, you leave with some pretty underpinnings that’ll help keep you and your tatas in good health.

I had my first fitting last week at Tryst Lingerie and lo and behold I’ve been wearing the wrong size for years (although I have to admit that I still believe that in some brands I have been wearing the right size–or maybe I’m just too stubborn to admit I’m wrong…).

I learned that there’s way more to the fitting than merely measuring around your rib cage and your bust. The shape of your breasts  is also an important factor to consider, as is the cut and style of the bra (how wide and at what angle are the underwires, for example)–along with many other factors–which is why a fitting with a pro is your best bet at finding the right bra for your needs.
