How fast can you run a mile?

May 19, 2011

Your answer to that question (if you’re middle aged) is a good predictor of your risk of heart attack or stroke in the future, says a couple of studies.

One study published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that low physical fitness at middle age is linked to greater lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease. For example, a 55-year-old man who runs a 15-minute mile has a 30% risk of heart disease compared to less than 10% risk of a man the same age who can run an 8-minute mile.

A great reason to get started on your prevention tactics now. (ie. get yourself to your favourite workout pronto!)
