Fitness Swellness: Nike #GetOutHere cold-weather training

IRV_6025

“Yes, I run outside all through winter.”

“No, I don’t usually get cold, just my face if it’s really cold.”

“No, I don’t slip and fall.”

“I just really get bored running on a treadmill.”

Every winter, I get the same questions from non-runners about my winter training. But the truth is I would choose running in the cold winter than on a humid summer day. Each winter, I’d say there are only typically two really terrible runs when it’s -35C with the windchill. Those, yes, are not fun at all. But I almost never slip on ice (I try to focus heavily on where and how I’m placing my foot on days the conditions are icier). And as for feeling cold, with the right gear and layering, you don’t really notice the cold (except for possibly your hands and face — I tend to wear thin gloves so I can still work my iPhone, and I do wear a balaclava but it’s hard to breathe through so I inevitably end up pulling it off my face, hence the frozen cheeks).

For this winter, Nike is challenging athletes to #getouthere on the cold and snowy days because dressed in Nike’s technologies, winter ain’t got nothin’ on you and your workout:

  • Aeroreact: Wearable technology that can intuitively sense, and respond to, performance in real time. Fabric opens up in response to sweat to keep you temperature just right
  • Therma-Sphere Max: Raised nodes trap warm air the way a wet suit traps warmer water, plus it’s 34% more breathable than therma-sphere (the previous technology).
  • Hyperwarm: Designed for athletes combating cold weather outdoor workouts by combining multiple textures into one form-fitting garment.

Your winter workout could win you a trip to Chicago, too!

If you keep up your workouts outside as the temperature drops and post on social media using the hashtags #GetOutHere and #Contest, you have a chance to be one of 48 weather-defying athletes chosen based on the story you tell of your outdoor training. These 48 athletes chosen will get to compete in the Get Out Here Challenge, which will take place in Chicago the week of December 8, 2015.

So all you have to do is create and post your outdoor training photos and/or videos on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with hashtags #GetOutHere and #contest. It’s so simple to enter!

I’ll be getting outside and training with Nike as part of a six-week #TrainTuesday workout. I worked up a sweat at the launch lead by Nike Master Trainer Eva Redpath and Toronto Argonaut and Nike Pacer Eric Black two weeks ago (that’s when the photo at the top of this post was taken). Last week, I missed the first session as I was in California for work, but will be out there tonight for week 2! Follow along via Instagram (@healthandswellness).

Oh, and NIKE.COM now ships to CANADA! Huzzah! This means you can order all the gear and footwear and custom Nike ID shoes, whaaaaat!

(I designed some running shoes, but I’ll post on those once I get them in my hands!)

Fitness Swellness: Walking Woof Workout at Purina PawsWay

Popsicle

A little over a week ago I partnered with Purina PawsWay to host the fourth Walking Woof Workout. The others focused on food and architecture, for example, but mine was focused on getting in some exercise as you walk your dog. Our first date for the event was rained out, but on July 19, we were blessed with hot and sunny weather — very hot, in fact.

Walking Woof Workout group!

It was so hot that I scaled back the workout because I didn’t want people or dogs getting dehydrated. I was happy with the turnout, though. I’m guessing about 25 people came, and the Save Our Scruff (SOS is a dog-rescue organization) also joined with three of their lovable dog rescues, who we all immediately fell in love with. I mean, who can resist three-month-old Popsicle??? He was a little tuckered out from the first half of the workout as you can see here.

Popsicle!!!

And this here is Rolan, an adorable bundle of fur who is just shy of four months old who’s lovely owner came into town to check out PawsWay services. Rolan’s just a wee thing but he held his own in the walk.

Rolan!

I’d mapped out my route prior to the event, and had found hills we could do repeats on (look at Danielle and Tango crushing the hill repeats!), some paths we could sprint around, and more, but I ended up skipping the sprints.

We also used benches to do step ups, and I wanted to do tricep dips using benches but at this point the sun was strong and I could find a shaded set of benches, so I called that off as well. But I did tell the group we would do squats each time a dog relieved themselves; as you can imagine, we did a lot of squats…

And it was fine to skip some of the exercises because many of us were just so enamoured with the adorable dogs and puppies. I wish all of the projects I work on could involve such cuties! This one here donned armbands for his workout:

Thank you to everyone who joined in for my PawsWay Walking Woof Workout and to Save Our Scruff for attending as well (I’ve only just been introduced to the organization but I am volunteering with them and in fact, today, I have my first SOS volunteer task)!

Fitness Swellness: Aritzia’s Parklife apparel

Getting your sweat on this summer? Shedding layers of clothing with the blazing hot weather here is always a motivating factor for getting fitter than ever. And this summer, Aritzia has launched a fitness collection called Parklife. The pieces are made of stretchy technical fabrics and there are loads of cute prints and great colours.

I’ve been working out in a few pieces from the line that I received from Aritzia a few months ago. First at a sweaty barre class at Barreworks, then at  the Bower Fitness x Kalola retreat I attended at Blue Mountain Resort (that’s where the shot above is from; I’m with my friends Mel and Sasha who are both dressed in Nike Women) then on a few runs on my own and while hiking in Vancouver.

The fit of the unpadded Crown Bra is comfortable (I wasn’t sure of the plain elastic on the bottom of it, but it didn’t cause any chafing) but I’d say it’s best for low-intensity workouts. The Timeout Shorts are comfortable and don’t ride up on me, but they are definitely one of the shorter shorts in my workout wear collection, so I’d say I only tend to wear them on very warm days and when I’m feeling pretty fit (they don’t offer much coverage!). I also own the Rematch T-shirt in neon yellow and this fits snugly, too snugly for my taste (I usually wear a small and the small I have really hugs the body).

Parklife ranges from $15 for socks up to $65 for tights (although much of the collection is on sale right now).
