Weight-loss must: Keep a food journal

(Bindewerk notebook)

The number one tool that’ll help you lose weight, according to new research from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics? Keeping a detailed food journal. Write down everything that you eat (and be very specific — include how it was prepared, the portion size, etc). In the study, people who kept journals lost six pounds more than those who did not journal every bite that passed their lips.

Two more habits that’ll help shed weight? Not skipping meals and not dining out at lunch (dining out for any meal was linked to less weight loss, but lunch in particular stood out).

The OMG diet

I’ll admit it. The title of the new book, Six Weeks to OMG: Get Skinnier than All Your Friends, kinda made me giggle.

But the diet itself sounds pretty suspect. Key strategies:

  • Don’t eat breakfast.
  • Take cold baths.
  • Drinks lots of black coffee.

For the reasons why he says you should be a black coffee-guzzling, breakfast-skipping, cold bath-taking dieter, you can check this article from the Telegraph.

Don’t eat breakfast and exercise on an empty stomache (well, other than coffee)? Last time I did that (back in CEGEP), when I’d slept in and went to the gym in a hurry with a friend, I fainted after a few minutes on the treadmill and the big he-man trainer at the gym had to catch me. And then I was too embarrassed to ever go back to that gym.

Nope, this diet will not be something I’ll be following.

Sweet news for chocoholics

Heard about this a few days ago but just in case some of you have not, thought it was definitely worth sharing (bet the news’ll make your day if you’re a chocolate lover):

If you regularly eat chocolate, you’re likely leaner than people who never touch (or rarely have) the stuff.

Average consumption in the study was twice a week — that’s pretty often.

The researchers, whose study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, believe it may be the antioxidants in chocolate that play a role in other factors that are linked to reducing body weight.

No indication of whether the study focused only on dark chocolate (which I interpret as good news for moi — I prefer milk chocolate!).
