Healthy Swellness: Win a trip for 2 to Jamaica from Nasacort Allergy 24HR!

Jamaica Sandals 1

As much as we all can’t wait for spring to arrive each year, with it, for some of us, comes nasal allergy symptoms. And I speak from personal experience. In fact, I’m sniffling right now. While my symptoms are pretty minor this season, in the past I’ve wanted to lock myself in a bubble boy-like chamber straight through to the middle of summer. The sneezing, runny nose and congestion becomes all consuming and the only thing you want is relief.

And chances are you feel my pain: nearly one-quarter of Canucks suffer from allergy rhinitis. It all goes beyond an itchy or runny nose and congestion, though. Consider how your allergies impact your life. Research shows that it could zap you of energy, and even contribute to memory loss (both of which will affect your work and social life), to name just a few ways it can rule your quality of life.

Travel Swellness: Pretty Palm Springs

IMG_3143

The first time I went to Palm Springs several years ago, I remember missing not being by the ocean. It felt strange to be in hot, sunny Cali and yet nowhere near water. But that trip, and and more so during my visit to Palm Springs last year, I’ve come to love this desert city for the design, food, mountains and yes, all that sunshine. There are pools, after all, to cool off in. Like the one at the Saguaro Palm Springs, where I stayed this trip.

While I loved my stay at the Saguaro, for a different type of vacation, my next visit to Palm Springs, I’d love to go down with my squad and rent the On the Rocks home all for ourselves. This is the sexy master bedroom; the entire house, is beautifully decorated, with stunning custom art work, and there’s a very glamorous pool with a fantastic view of the city.

It’s not all about living this luxe life, though. You can go out and be amongst the native palm trees…

…and go check out the San Andreas Fault and hike in slot canyons.

And eat at James Beard Award-winning restaurants (this is Workshop Kitchen + Bar, where I enjoyed my favourite meal of this trip).

And there’s also all of the incredible mid-century modern homes. We played peeping tom — well, we took a tour of celeb homes — and this is is Leonardo Di Caprio’s Palm Spring’s pad. Pardon me, Oscar winner Leo Di Caprio.

But for the full story on how to best spend 48 hours in Palm Springs, you’ll have to check out my article published on AmongMen. Now, let me get back to figuring out when I’m goin’ back to Cali…

Healthy Swellness: Travelan

palm trees

Planning a vacation? Perhaps you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean (in which case, I’m very jealous) or Africa or Asia (even more jealous!). My travel essentials usually include sunscreen, mosquito repellent and some antihistamines (I’ve had some allergic reactions when on the road in the past, or they’re helpful when the repellent hasn’t done its job well!).

What many of us aren’t so diligent about is making sure we don’t get sick from traveller’s diarrhea. Yes, I’m talking traveler’s diarrhea and while it’s not a pretty subject, it needs to be addressed. How terrible to be on a trip and taken down by T.D. As careful as you try to be with the food you eat and what you drink, it’s very easy to consume something contaminated with bacteria, viruses or parasites. T.D., in fact, is the most common medical condition of people traveling to developing countries.

It would break my heart to be on a trip and not be able to enjoy it because I was running to the washroom all the time. And it’s happened, years ago, and I’m sure many of you can relate given how common this is. But I’ve learned there’s an over-the-counter product that you can take to help prevent traveler’s diarrhea: Travelan. You start taking a tablet or two 48 hours before your trip and then throughout your travels with every meal, three times a day. If you’re wondering how effective it is, clinical studies show it works against the most common cause of T.D. (Enterotoxigenic E. Coli) in 90 percent of cases.

Now, would you rather risk falling ill from T.D. on your trip or take something that can help keep you enjoying your trip?

You can find out  more about Travelan ($39.99 at your local pharmacy) including travel tips at www.travelancanada.ca.
