Sweat Week: Sun protection for sweat fests

The Discovery Channel’s got Shark Week; well, I bring you Sweat Week — a week of posts on surviving the heat waves this summer.

I sweat a lot. Think drippy. Drenched. Doused in perspiration. YUCK. I once popped into a shop after a run and the cashier asked me if it was raining, Um, no, that’s just how much I perspire when I run, lady, thanks for noticing.

So I’m excited about Neutrogena Wet Guard Sunscreen. It’s mostly being promoted for kids, it seems to me anyhow, as you can apply it to wet skin and the sunscreen can break through moisture. The technology involves a special blend of emollients and polymers that cut through water on the skin, allowing the UV filters to set up on your skin quickly, providing the same waterproof sunscreen protection as when applied on dry skin.

So when the kiddies are running out of the pool, you can apply it on them in a jiffy before they run off to play some more.

But it’s ideal for sweaty folks like me who can now reapply it asap (making a lovely melange of sweat and sunscreen on my skin, yummy! But hey, what matters most is that I’m not getting burned, right?).

Shady business

File this under “I-should-know-better”:

On long runs, I make sure to slap on some sunscreen (current favourite is the new Climatik Outdoor Protective Lotion from Marcelle — hey, if it’s good enough for Olympic Gold Medallist Jennifer Heil, then it’s good enough for regular ol’ weekend-warrior me). It comes in a sleek little tube (slim enough to tuck into my hydration belt so I can reapply while out working up a sweat — the downside is that at only 50 mL, I go through a tube pretty darn quickly) and its formulation was developed to handle the extreme variations of our lovely Canadian climate.

And yet while I make sure to slather on UV protection, I don’t wear sunglasses on my run.

Come to think of it, a lot of the runners I see aren’t sporting shades either. Learning about the potential dangers to the eyes from UV exposure is enough to get me to change my ways, though. My next gear investment will most definitely be a pair of running sunglasses — I’m kinda digging this pair called Forsake from Oakley.
