Gotta get the doughnuts…

Those doughnuts above? Perhaps the best I’ve ever had.

Get these Bakelab doughnuts yourself over at the chic little boutique Lost & Found (1255 Dundas St. W.).

(To be honest, I’m thankful it’s somewhat out of the way for me  or else I’d be there every weekend.)

Carol (the baker behind Bakelab) bakes up cookies ($2 each) for the shop (such as chocolate ginger sandwich with white chocolate vanilla ginger ganache filling and cocoa nib daquois with homemade nutella (psst, these ones gluten and dairy free) during the week, and on weekends, it’s doughnut time.

Using as many local and organic ingredients as possible, and homemade extracts if possible,  and organic canola and coconut oil, Carol bakes up small batches of insanely yummy doughnuts ($3 each)  in flavours that have included:

  • Lemon meringue (lemon curd-filled yeast doughnut topped with Italian meringue)
  • Chocolate peanut butter (peanut butter-filled yeast doughnut with chocolate glaze)
  • Espresso cream-filled yeast doughnut with chocolate glaze
  • Creme bruleed espresso cream-filled raised doughnut: (brulee the sugared top of the doughnut until it’s crispy and caramelized) 
  • Chai cake doughnut with vanilla chai icing
  • Red velvet cake doughnuts topped with cream cheese icing and white chocolate

Go get ’em. Totally worth the sugar high.

(And just so you know, I’m writing this post at the tail end of a juice cleanse, which means I really just want to dive into my computer screen to devour the doughnuts in the picture. Particularly selfless of me to post this is my hazy, hungry state, if I may say so myself.)

Chobani, Chobani, Chobani

(I just like saying Chobani, it’s fun! Try it.)

I don’t know where I first heard of Chobani — probably some foodie blog a few years ago, and I’d read that it was the best Greek yogurt ever (and had heard that people even make cross-border shopping trips to pick up the stuff) — so I was dying to try it, but it was only sold in the U.S. I even looked for it whenever I was stateside but I usually didn’t have a fridge in my hotel room so it just never worked out.

So I was postiively giddy to hear it was launching in Toronto.

I got my hands on a few containers last week…and my verdict?

It’s good…but I think it’d been built up so much from all the hype that I expected it to be the best yogurt I’d ever had, and like I said it’s just not blowing my mind.

I think people go bananas over the fact that it’s fat-free. Which, yes, I like. And while it may seem high in sugar, lactose tends to be high in sugar so I’m guessing much of the sugar content is likely from that (plus it’s natural sugar, which I much prefer to aspartame). It’s also high in protein (as Greek yogurts are) — two times the protein compared to regular yogurt.

Available in five flavours (Black Cherry, Strawberry, Peach, Pomegranate and Plain) at Loblaws, Fortinos, Superstore and Valu-Mart locations in Toronto.; $1.79 for 170 gram container, $8.59 for 907-gram container.

Super sweetener

Is Canadian maple syrup poised to be the next superfood? A researcher from the University of Rhode Island studied pure maple syrup from Quebec and found 54 beneficial compounds, several with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (20 of which appear to play an important role in health)–five of which have not yet been seen in nature until now. That Mother Nature is pretty crafty…

Bring on the stack of pancakes, right? Ok, no, but certainly good news for baking healthy treats using this product from our home and native land as your sweetener.
