Your outdoor gym

You’ve decided that in 2011 you’re gonna make like Fergie and be all up in the gym just working on your fitness.

Amazing. Just don’t forget you’ve already got a free gym membership–the great outdoors.

And if the snow and frigid temps are keeping you from working out outside, consider this: you may lose weight faster working out outdoors. A University of Essex study found that outdoor exercise burns up to 20 percent more calories than indoor exercise because the body uses energy to keep warm and to deal with the elements such as rain and wind.

So layer up, put on a hat and get to it. It’s really not that bad. I swear.

Play in the snow, and money will be donated to a great cause

It’s a little messy outside today in Toronto. But if you can get past your suede booties getting slushed up and the piles of snow doubling your commute time, and take in the winter wonderland around you, it is pretty stunning out there.

Another reason I’m happy the snow is here? It means that we all have the chance to help raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation through the Curel Snow Angels program. For every photograph of someone making a snow angel uploaded to curel.ca, Curel will donate one dollar to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Just like that. Easy peasy.

So make like a top model — Tyra would remind you to “smeyes” — pull on your Adidas by Stella McCartney ski pants and Sorels, and capture you and your friends and kids making snow angels in the fluffy stuff.

Need more of a reason? Email healthandswellness@gmail.com with your name, phone number and the link to your photo and you could win a Curel prize package valued at $100. Deadline to enter is March 12, 2010 at noon and the winner will be chosen by random draw.
