Healthy Swellness: Take a stand for three hours

Anthropologie magnetic timer

How’s this for a pretty simple way that could help you lose weight: stand for three hours a day at the office.

An exercise scientist in England calculated that if you make like Ernest Hemingway and stand while you work and do so for three hours of your work day, you burn an extra 144 calories per day. Doesn’t sound like much, but when you work five days a week, that totals more than 30,000 calories a year — which translates to losing more than eight pounds annually. And that’s without changing any other habits.

Now I just need to find myself a chic lectern-style desk…think West Elm makes one? 🙂

Get up off of your seat

Sit less and you could help reduce your cancer risk: new findings from a researcher at the Alberta Health Sciences-Cancer Care suggest that:

  • 37,200 cases of lung cancer
  • 30,600 cases of prostate cancer
  • 12,000 cases of endometrial cancer
  • and 1,800 of ovarian cancer

could be prevented if people were more active.

My latest motivation to get out and active? The flashy Nike sneakers I received at the Nike San Francisco Women’s Half-Marathon. Love the hot pink laces (they came with an extra set of black laces, but why on earth would I opt for boring black over these?!)
