Foodie Swellness: “Get away” with Lay’s World Flavourites (and enter my giveaway!)

Lays Chips

(*This giveaway is now closed. Scroll down for the winner’s name.)

It’s the wonderful time of year again: When the Lay’s Do Us a Flavour chip flavours are in store (but available for a limited time only!). This year’s three flavours available in Canada are Lay’s Bacon Poutine (for Canada, obvs), Thai Sweet Chili, and Cheese & Onion (from the UK).

If you’re like me, aka a potato chip fiend, you check out what unique chip flavours are available when you travel (in Greece last month, we scored oregano chips for our sailing trip). Now, while a trip to Quebec, Thailand or the UK would be absolutely lovely, what I like about the Lay’s Do Us a Flavour campaign is that you get to take a flavour vacation right at home wherever you are in Canada. Share that flavour vacay with friends and family on social media with #WorldFlavourites like they have here in this video. You may have not gone anywhere all summer or year yet…but you can play like you have:

While I have been traveling a ton this summer, I got to host some friends for a World Flavourite dinner last week while at home in Toronto (I ended up holding it at my lovely friend’s place since the picnic I had planned got rained out). I went with the theme of home sweet home, that is, a Canadiana theme and got loads of dishes the included maple syrup (such as a to die for cornbread), a few of my fave Canadian cheeses, a few dishes including thick slabs of bacon (including as a topping to a deliciously garlicky caesar salad), one hefty full slab of ribs, sticky, tender Miami ribs, and some sweet Ontario peaches for dessert. And if you’re wondering where the poutine is, well, I didn’t have to get any poutine, because I was covered on that French-Canadian classic with the Lay’s World Flavourite Bacon Poutine chips in all of their smoky goodness. What a fun summer evening with friends with a feast of comfort foods (with a side of the meat sweats by the end of the night!).

If you haven’t had a chance to try the three flavours  yet, they are available now in stores for a limited time where Lays products are sold, and come September, the Lay’s World Flavourites will also be available in 40g bags at Subway restaurants across Canada, making it even easier to enjoy a virtual getaway.

But I’ve got some good news: I can help one of you with your own Flavour Vacation! I’m giving away one Lay’s World Flavourites prize pack, which includes the three winning flavours plus a $100 VISA giftcard (which I hope you’ll use toward an actual getaway, or with your own World Flavourite-inspired dinner of your own!).  Or how about spending it entirely on Lay’s chips? Hello!

Foodie Swellness: Make a healthy poutine with McCain Superfries

healthy poutine

French fries are one of my favourite foods. So anytime I can make them the star of my meal (and not just a side dish), count me in!

So as you  may expect, poutine is one of my faves. I don’t indulge in it too often (hello, heavy on fat and sugar) but I make it at home sometimes as a super quick meal, and I’ve now started to make it a little bit healthier. I think next time I have some girlfriends over to watch a chick flick or just catch up, it’s super simple to make so I’m not tied up cooking something super labour-intensive.

I used McCain Superfries here, and for the gravy, I followed this healthy, low-salt recipe for mushroom gravy from Cooking Light. Mushrooms are a source of vitamin D and are low in calories, and they’re one of my favourite veggies, so I love topping the fries with a pile of earthy, yummy mushrooms. The gravy is super simple to make and mostly just calls for a bit of chopping and then it simmers so really this can be thrown together super easily. For cheese, I suppose you could go with a skim milk mozzarella if you really want to go lighter, but I chose to go with cheese curds.

Enjoy! Let me know if you have favourite French fry meals where it takes centre stage. Check out other Modifry™ recipes here!

Foodie Swellness: When Pigs Fry tour in Toronto

 When Pigs Fry

I’ve been to some pretty incredible destinations over the past few years. And I often start to wonder “Why do I live in Toronto again?” (especially when there’s flooding, snowstorms, horrible humidity back home to contend with). There’s always some sort of strange weather I manage to miss when I’m away, that I read about on Twitter and see on Instagram as I’m watching ocean waves crash onto the shore in Barbados, or while I’m in Singapore eating one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

So I’m always looking for things to love about the Toronto. And, yes, I know, I know, there’s lots to love. For example, it is Hogtown, after all (and I am a bacon lover!) —  and I learned all about the city’s Hogtown roots in the Urban Adventures new When Pigs Fry tour some weeks ago.

The three-hour tour ($59) includes stops at a few places where you learn about pork and of course, you get to taste dishes at several tasty piggy restos — trust me, arrive with an empty stomach as you’ll be trying pulled pork poutine and so many more delicious porky foods. I made the mistake of having brunch the morning of my tour and had to skip the peameal sandwich at our first stop. Sigh. It still hurts when I think about that lost opportunity.

Throw in some piggy trivia (complete with pork-based treats if you get the question right) while hanging out with some fellow bacon-loving foodies, how’s that for a fun afternoon?

When Pigs Fry, Urban Adventures. Check it out.
