Business travel is bad for your health

Living life à la George Clooney in Up in the  Air–that is travelling all the time for work–results in poor BMI and obesity, says a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Actually, referring to this business travel as down on the ground rather than up in the air is more accurate, as 81 percent was conducted in cars (in this study at least). And as you might expect, it’s the poor food choices while on the road and spending much time sitting that were leading factors to the health issues.

More specifically, employees who travelled 20 days or more per month had average BMI of 27.5kg/m2 compared to 26.1 for employees who travelled less than six days monthly.

Business travel not looking so glamorous anymore, eh?

Drop extra lbs and gain better memory

As if looking and feeling great weren’t enough reward, researchers have now discovered that losing weight is also linked to improving your memory.

The findings, which are soon to be published in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, found that bariatric patients improved from slightly impaired memory and concentration to a normal level 12 weeks after surgery. It’s thought that certain risk factors linked to being overweight (such as high blood pressure and sleep apnea) cause some damage to the brain that is somewhat reversible–so eliminate those risk factors…and it makes sense that memory and concentration improve.

Extra motivation to get healthier!

Quit your soda habit

If you love the fizzy bubbly as much as Zohan does, you have want to have a good look at what food you’re eating and make some improvements: Those who adore soda pop appear to also eat less healthy diets, according to findings published in Hypertension.

Need reasons to cut down on your soda habit? The study found that soda drinkers:

  • consume less calcium, magnesium and potassium
  • tend to have increased blood pressure
  • and if your high sugar consumption is paired with high salt consumption, you’re more likely to develop heart problems
