The Weekly Nail Report — Marathon manicure

Nail-job craving: Something EPIC. I’m running my first marathon (that’s 42.2 kilometres, for you non-running folk) and I’ve had some pretty fantastic manicures for my half-marathons (remember the colour-block manicure for my personal best half-marathon last spring? Or the hot pink and yellow pointed pinkies? And how about the sleek, streamlined black and white v-gap number I sported for the Nike Women’s Half in San Fran?) so this nail job has to be at least twice as amazing. Something as amazing as me, the former non-runner, running a marathon.

How I satisfied that craving: When I saw this manicure on Paige from Fashion, the first words out of my mouth? “Holy sh*t.” And I couldn’t get it outta my mind. The chevron shape, but way hotter with the tiny dots of colour? So I asked Leeanne at Tips Nail Bar to do a similar look. The manicure took a long while (although not as long as it’ll take me to run the marathon!) and it was very busy at the salon so she started my manicure and Emi Schneider finished up most of the dotting. Here’s what they used:

Base coat: Entity in Spotlight (that’s the white). Colours: Nars Amchoor (that’s the yellow), Nars Ratin Jot (that’s the purple), YSL Bleu Majorelle (that’s the blue), China Glaze Japanese Koi (that’s the orange) and Revlon Knockout (that’s the black). Dots were created using a dotter tool from a craft shop.

How this nail colour make me feel: I think this is my favourite “race manicure” thus far. It makes me think of both pretty glassware from Anthropologie, but also the pixelated colours of an Archie comic book. It reminded a makeup artist at Tips who was getting her nails done next to me of an MIA video. Emi’s dubbed it the “heavy chev-y” mani (chev-y as in chevron).

Love it or hate it: Love. Love. Love. Love. Love. I’m gonna take this as a sign that my marathon is going to be fabulous.

The Weekly Nail Report — the Louboutin edition

Nail-job craving: Nine weeks ago, I saw BeautyGeeks Janine Falcon with her Louboutin mani and knew I had to have it right away. Then why the heck did I wait nine weeks to get it then? Because at the time, I had JUST cut my nails as short as they could go — doh! And it took me this long to get my nails to grow long enough for this lil nail job.

How I satisfied that craving: I trekked on over to Tips Nail Bar. In terms of colour combo, Leeanne and I discussed how the best combos are with a big contrast in between the colours. Since I wasn’t keen on having a dark shade underneath my nails (nor on my nail — feels wrong to me since it’s spring now), we went with a pastel blue with the subtlest of glitters on my nails with a subtle empty moon — it’s Artistic Color Gloss in Tease. Then, on the reverse side (the underside of my nail tips), Leeanne applied neon pink China Glaze in Pool Party, followed by a top coat.

How this nail colour make me feel: Like I perhaps need some therapy to help me with my nail obsession, as it’s reaching all sorts of new  levels. How’s that? Well:

  1. I never have my nails this long, so I’m constantly touching the tips.
  2. I usually have my nails in a squoval shape — this oval shape is brand new to me so I can’t stop looking at them (even more than usual). In fact, I think some chick on the subway thought I was some weirdo as I saw her watching my staring at my fingers, ha ha. I totally think my oval nails look like those fake nails they use to show you what a nail polish colour looks like. (And btw in case you want to make your fingers look slimmer, I think this does the trick.)
  3. Now, not only do I have my nail colour to look at lovingly, I just have to turn my hand over and there’s a whole new shade to admire — doubling my nail-admiration time.

Love it or hate it: Love.

The Weekly Nail Report

Nail-job craving: Been dying to try out the Essie neon Poppy Razzi collection, which is out in May, but had a few other manis (including my Chicago mani) before I could test out a shade. But that graffiti-ish Chicago mani was finally starting to show some wear and I have Harry’s Spring Run Off 8K tomorrow, so it’s perfect timing as I tend to gravitate to brights for my races.

How I satisfied that craving: Essie Weingarten suggests doing a coat of white nail polish before applying a neon nail poish so it worked out well that I have the opaque pale shade of Artistic Color Gloss in Sassy on my nails. Overtop of that I applied Essie in Camera and then top coat as the neons dry matte and I wanted shine.

How this nail colour make me feel: Like I’m back in university — the shade is much like the pink highlighters I used to use in school. Hopefully it’ll inspire me to have the same energy and stamina I had pulling all-nighters studying back then for my race tomorrow and for the 32k I have to run on Sunday for marathon training.

Love it or hate it: Love. I’ll be wearing this shade overtime this summer.
