Journal your weight away

Could dropping some extra weight be as simple as putting pen to paper?

Yes, a writing exercise that takes just 15 minutes may help you shed those extra lbs, says a new study published in Psychological Science. Jotting down your thoughts about values important to you may help you lose more weight than if you don’t take the time to do so.

The study involved a group of 45 women with a BMI of 23 or higher who were asked to  rank the importance of a set of values (including everything from relationships to creativity), and half the group was asked to write about a value close to their heart, while the other half were asked to write about a value less key to them. Four months later, those who wrote about an important value had lost some weight whereas the others had put on some weight.

The thinking is that by writing about values important to you helps you feel better, and so you may not be as apt to eat that unnecessary snack, for example.

Something to consider if “losing weight” made it onto your list of resolutions for 2012.

Organic growth

Although packing your troubles away may be what you need to achieve closure, I love the idea of jotting down your happy hopes and dreams into an eco-friendly Botanical Paperworks journal and then planting it , growing your thoughts into a pretty wildflower garden.

(Admittedly, I was initially disappointed that only the journal’s cover is made with the wildflower-seeded paper. That said, writing on the seed-embedded sheets is somewhat difficult, making the smooth eco-friendy inner sheets a very welcome writing surface; plus this way, you get to hold onto your pages of brilliant ideas and musings.)

Take note

When a girlfriend recently pulled a red Moleskine journal out of her handbag, I was practically salivating — so classic, chic and crisp. (Is it wrong to be so turned on by a notebook?)

“I gotta get me one of those,” I thought to myself.

I still need to get one, but what I have been using is Moleskine’s Wellness Journal from their new Passions collection ($21 each). There are six editions in all (besides Wellness, there’s Recipes, Wine, Books, Films and Music) with stickers, icons, ribbon place markers and the like, to keep you super organized.

Tabbed sections in Wellness includes Personal Goals, Exercise Log, Diet, General Health (track your herbs and supplements here, along with your body therapy appointments), Games/Sport and Inspirations. Games/Sport, (where you log in the date, event, participants and score) is less useful for me — but I figure I can use it as a running log when the Exercise section gets filled up.

And I love that if you need extra pages, you can print off free page templates to paste in or tuck into the notebook pocket. (also a way for you to test out the page formats before investing in a Passions notebook yourself).
