Support system

Forget about lifting and separating. Elevating and compressing is what you want out of your sports bra especially if you’ve got a large chest, says a research study from University of Wollongong.

Reasons for running

study conducted at Temple University focused on first-time marathoners and found that men tend to be  motivated more by a sense of personal acheivement and competition, whereas women run for reasons revolving around psychological coping (such as “to improve my mood”) or to manage their weight.

Me, I run so I can wear the cool gear (like this outfit from the Stella McCartney Spring 2010 running collection). OK, not really (well, perhaps just a little) but I run because it’s just something I do now (it’s really simply become a part of my regular routine so for the most part, I don’t even have to think about it). Plus, I enjoy being outdoors and the social aspect is a big part of it (I get to catch up with my girlfriends E. and T., who I met through the Running Room — you get to know a person really well when you’re out for runs that last over two  hours!). I also like the sense of accomplishment (even with my slow times!).

Why do you run?

Shady business

File this under “I-should-know-better”:

On long runs, I make sure to slap on some sunscreen (current favourite is the new Climatik Outdoor Protective Lotion from Marcelle — hey, if it’s good enough for Olympic Gold Medallist Jennifer Heil, then it’s good enough for regular ol’ weekend-warrior me). It comes in a sleek little tube (slim enough to tuck into my hydration belt so I can reapply while out working up a sweat — the downside is that at only 50 mL, I go through a tube pretty darn quickly) and its formulation was developed to handle the extreme variations of our lovely Canadian climate.

And yet while I make sure to slather on UV protection, I don’t wear sunglasses on my run.

Come to think of it, a lot of the runners I see aren’t sporting shades either. Learning about the potential dangers to the eyes from UV exposure is enough to get me to change my ways, though. My next gear investment will most definitely be a pair of running sunglasses — I’m kinda digging this pair called Forsake from Oakley.
