Must-have mascara

I’m all aflutter over my latest beauty buy. Even though I have several brand new mascaras to test out in my beauty bins, I sprinted to Sephora this weekend to shell out my hard-earned cash on one.

Why?

Backstage at LG Fashion Week last week I noticed an editor’s super long lashes and I had to know if she had lash extensions on. Nope, it’s D.J.V. Beautinizer Fiberwig LX, she said, a mascara that creates the illusion of false lashes thanks to its fiber-film formula.

I love me some long lashes, so I knew immediately: Must. Have. Now. Hence my Flo-Jo-worthy dash to Sephora.

And my verdict? Love it. I bet I’m batting my long, luscious lashes so much it’d make The Rules authors proud.

Note: If you prefer fullness, you might want to try DiorShow instead (I did one eye in DiorShow and one in D.J.V. for a side by side comparison). Actually, come to think of it, I’ll try using D.J.V. with the Cover Girl Lash Blast that’s been my everyday favourite all season to add some volume to the mix as well.

Beauty & the East: The Brow House

This week, Health & Swellness is spotlighting some of the get-gorgeous hot spots in Leslieville. This east-end Toronto ‘hood is best known for its brunch, bakeries and coffee shops, but a girl cannot get by solely on caffeine and cupcakes, and, thankfully, a few beauty shops have started to crop up, too.

Who: The Brow House

What: The focus here is brows — everything from shaping to colouring — but you can also hook yourself up with makeup application, facial waxing and faux lashes. Brow design starts at $20.

Why: I was feeling a little like Ugly Betty when she first started working at Mode but a quick visit to a pro at The Brow House sorted out my bushy brows. “If you have the wrong brow shape, it’s very distracting and if you have the right brows, it frames your most beautiful feature, your eyes,” says Kira, founder of The Brow House. She believes that 98 percent of the public have the wrong brows, and her goal is some serious brow education.

When: Tuesday to Friday, 12 p.m to 8 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: 1256 Queen St. East; 416-804-9716.
