Chocolate is good for you

I’m all for any research that declares “chocolate is a health food” (even if it is stretching the truth a bit, and, um, when the research is sponsored by a chocolate company…).

Screen time

Those hours you spend poring over clothing on Net-A-Porter and Gilt may bring about having to order a bigger clothing size–and not just thanks to being sedentary.

It seems that time in front of your computer screen can make you crave chocolate, says new research from the University of Copenhagen. The women in the study who did a task on a computer consumed an extra 230 calories compared to women who just kicked back during the same amount of time. The researchers believe that the mental stress of the computer work may trigger changes in blood sugar and hormone levels that trick the brain into thinking it has worked off lots of calories that need replaced.

Sweet and salty is a match made in heaven

I grew up eating bowls of Parlour ice cream (Heavenly Hash was my fave) followed by potato chips (usually sour cream and onion) and loving the combo of sweet and salty has stuck with me. And so I’m not sure why it took me so long to try salted caramels, but having now tasted Purdy’s Himalayan Pink Salt Caramels, I find myself asking its pretty little box, “Where have you been all my life?”

I did a little fact checking with the company, and the pink salt is indeed from the Himalayan Mountain range, harvested from an ancient sea salt deposit that was crystallized during the Jurassic Era over 200 million years ago.

With only two precious caramels left in my supply, I’ll be ordering up a fresh new box pronto from the Vancouver-based chocolatier.
