Journal your weight away

Could dropping some extra weight be as simple as putting pen to paper?

Yes, a writing exercise that takes just 15 minutes may help you shed those extra lbs, says a new study published in Psychological Science. Jotting down your thoughts about values important to you may help you lose more weight than if you don’t take the time to do so.

The study involved a group of 45 women with a BMI of 23 or higher who were asked to  rank the importance of a set of values (including everything from relationships to creativity), and half the group was asked to write about a value close to their heart, while the other half were asked to write about a value less key to them. Four months later, those who wrote about an important value had lost some weight whereas the others had put on some weight.

The thinking is that by writing about values important to you helps you feel better, and so you may not be as apt to eat that unnecessary snack, for example.

Something to consider if “losing weight” made it onto your list of resolutions for 2012.

Mid-morning snack–your diet’s demise?

That nibble you have between breakfast and lunch may be causing you to shed weight more slowly than if you were not having that snack. Research published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that women who have this snack lost 7 percent of the body weight, compared to the 11 percent that women who did not have the snack.

The researchers believe this may be due to the short time period between breakfast and lunch, perhaps making the snack more something you have out of habit rather than hunger.

Another tidbit from the study? Women who report snacking twice a day consume  more fibre than those who don’t snack twice or more daily.

Slow down your eating and you’ll eat less

Some new studies are providing more proof that the rate at which you eat affects how much food you consume  including insights such as men eat faster than women, heavier people eat faster than slimmer people and this finding that particularly caught my attention:

People eat refined grains faster than they eat whole grains (the whole grains are more fibrous so you have to chew more).

Not sure why I find that interesting–maybe just looking for more reasons to completely switch over to whole grains myself.

(oh, and in case it’s not clear — the faster you eat, the more you consume)
