Shopping as a workout

With the holidays approaching and most of us in a shopping frenzy, here are some tips from the LA Times about how to turn your shopping excursion into a workout. It says how a 150-lb person can burn up to 500 calories in three hours (kinda low considering I typically burn around that much in an hour’s run, but better than crashing on the couch watching the Griswolds and burning much less, I suppose).

(although the personal trainer interviewed refers to it as a hike, I don’t think he’s ever been to a designer sample sale — I personally approach it as a high-intensity, competitive sport, don’t you?).

(And this little sweater above, the Llama Love Sweater from Madewell? I’d definitely be sprinting and fighting off other shoppers for it, if it were in stock, that is).

Burnin’ up

Eating hot, spicy foods helps you burn more calories? It may sound like an old wive’s tale, but new research from UCLA’s Center for Human Nutrition has found that consuming one meal containing the non-burning cousin of capsaicin (the substance in spicy foods that causes your body to heat up) does increase energy expenditure for several hours afterwards.
