Sweeten up

Next time that health nut of a coworker sniffs disdainfully at the iced capp you’ve treated yourself to, tell them research has proved that it helps you play nice — by being less argumentative and less aggressive — so to back off. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, found that a sweetened drink may provide the brain with energy to keep impulses under control, which prevents you from sniping back when under stress.

(now this doesn’t mean you have an excuse to have one every day!)

Memory game

Have an upcoming games night and looking to crush your opponents? Make sure you get your zzz’s.

A Washington University study that focused on 24 students found that the students who slept in between studying and taking a computer word game test performed very strongly on the test. The researchers speculate that during slow-wave sleep, the hippocampus takes recently learned memories and moves them over to the long-term storage area of the brain.
