Foodie Swellness: Mad Jack’s new Ginger Flavoured Lager and Hard Root Beer

FullSizeRender (77)

So for the past while, I’ve been looking for a ready-made alcoholic bevvie that doesn’t taste like cough syrup (I find so many of the berry flavoured ones taste like so) and that’s easy to drink (too many harsh tasting vodka-based coolers).

I’m not a beer drinker (once in awhile at an event or, you know, back in my sorority days…) but I have come around to being a fan of ciders, but I only recently discovered Mad Jack. And to its original apple lager, the brand has just added two new flavours, which kinda fill the “need” for when you just want a pop, but alcoholic. I love all things ginger lately and so the Mad Jack Ginger Flavoured Lager is yummy and not too overly ginger-y (I’ve had ginger beers that burn because of the strong ginger flavour), and the Hard Root Beer? It’s actually made me like root beer (which is a soft drink I have never been too fond of).

I’m all for drinks that you can just pop open and enjoy (I’ll leave the muddling and shaking to the bartender to do!) and I know I will be picking up this trio this summer.

Stay tuned for more of my favourite summer drinks and cocktails on the blog!

Being apple-shaped not necessarily unhealthier than being pear-shaped

A few years ago, having a higher waist-to-hip ratio (aka being apple-shaped) was declared to be unhealthier than being pear-shaped, and experts were saying a tape measure would provide a better snapshot of your health than would stepping on a scale.

Now a review of several studies published in The Lancet refutes this, saying your waist-to-hip ratio is no better at predicting heart and stroke risk than BMI. (In fact, it’s blood pressure, history of diabetes and cholesterol levels that provide the most info in terms of determining cardiovascular risk.)

There’s a new Prince in town

I feel like Snow White when I bite into a Red Prince (minus the falling into a deep sleep part).

This new apple variety, which hails originally from Europe and is now being grown in Ontario, is crunchy, juicy and sweet with just the right hit of  tartness. But it’s the Red Prince’s perfect plump roundness and even, deep red peel that have me feeling like I should have seven dwarves at my feet. It’s a food stylist’s dream come true when it comes to apples, I would guess.

To celebrate its launch, those of you slaving away in offices in the downtown Bay St. area should check out the Red Prince Civility Event:

When: Friday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. til 2 p.m.

Where: Toronto’s underground PATH system at the Exchange Tower (130 King St. West, concourse level) and First Canadian Place (100 King St. West, concourse level)

Why: To introduce the Red Prince and to launch the 30 Day Civility Challenge

What: More than 10, 000 apples will be handed out (get your hands on one, you’ll see it puts other apple varieties to shame!). There’ll also be complementary hand massages courtesy of Adelaide Spa. Plus, Louise Fox, owner of the Etiquette Ladies, will be on site to offer helpful etiquette tips and to launch the 30 Day Civility Challenge. With a goal of reintroducing manners into our everyday, this month-long program’s tweets will give you a daily civility to-do, such as “smile at a stranger you see today.”

And given the latest findings from Psychological Science, that the warm fuzzy feelings we experience when we witness other people’s selfless deeds may lead us to go out and do good ourselves, here’s to hoping this is one trend that catches on.
