Fitness Swellness: Running is antiaging

Nike Zoom Structure

According to new research published in the journal PloS One running can slow the aging process.

As we get older, our horsepower (or max aerobic capacity) declines, but when researchers studied a group of adults who ran or walked three times a week for at least half an hour each time over a period of six months, the ones who ran benefited from improved horsepower (or lower metabolic cost of walking), and easier movement and better quality of life.

So run on, runner, run on.

Silky smooth

Silk’s a fabric with health benefits, according to new research conducted at the University of Bologna. Underwear made of silk was shown to help relieve the symptoms of thrush (the fungal infection that can cause itching and redness down there). The panties, made of medical-grade silk that also contains an antimicrobial agent, helped reduce the moist conditions candida albicans (the yeast that causes thrush) thrives in.

And in a past study, silk was shown to have potential antiaging properties by helping to form a barrier layer on the skin, thereby potentially plumping the skin and reducing the appearance fine lines.

All this to say I’m pretty sure this gives me a valid reason for ordering this silk Yumi Kim romper. :)

Go nuts

Walnuts pack a powerful punch–they’ve just been found in research from the American Chemical Society to be the highest in antioxidants when it comes to tree and ground nuts–almost twice as much as the average nut.

Add some to your salads or keep a small packet as an emergency snack at your desk or in your handbag. And btw, roasted nuts usually have decreased levels of antioxidants than raw or unroasted ones.
