Travel Swellness: Chic beach getaways

Beach essentials

Sun and sand in your schedule? Just some of my essentials for a beach getaway:

  • Cute cheap-and-chic bikini. So many inexpensive options if you can get away with a string bikini style from shops including Asos (like the one pictured here), Walmart (I have a few from this big box store — you can get one for $12!) and Topshop.
  • Sunscreen. My routine: use an SPF moisturizer (Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration has a lovely coconutty scent and provides great hydration) post-morning shower, and then I throw a continuous spray sunscreen into my beach tote for quick reapplications throughout the day.
  • Flip flops. Just picked up new Havaianas (they truly do feel better on your feet than the cheaper flip flops on the market), but I’m coveting these ones, too.
  • iPad. Yes, I’ve been scolded to get offline when on vacay…but I think I’d just be more anxious. (OK, perhaps it’s time for another digital detox to relearn a few things!)

Still in the planning stages for your vacay? I know I’m always planning my next trip! Be sure to check out the four incredible  Caribbean boutique properties featured over on ElleCanada.com. (If you’ve been following me on Instagram or Twitter over the last few months and were wondering what lovely locales I was at, you’ll find your answer in the article.) I still dream of being back at any one of these destinations on a daily basis! Can you blame me? Check out this breathtaking view…

Beauty Swellness: Kiss Gel Polish System from Walmart

Kiss gel products Walmart

When Walmart asks you to see what you can score at their store for just $100 in a frugal shopping challenge, what do you do? You say hellz yeah, well, that is if you’re me and you kinda sorta (completely) like (love) shopping.

So I trekked over to my local Walmart and headed straight to the cosmetics department. Because wouldn’t you if you saw at-home soak-off gel manicures as pretty as this?

Sometimes Fancy mani

And this?

Sometimes Fancy

Those lovely nails belong to my friend Lindsay of Sometimes Fancy and she’d done them using the Kiss at-home gel system. So once I beelined to the nail section, I scooped up the UV lamp, the starter kit and the two polishes Linds used (yeah, totally SWF, erm, SAF situation over here) and it totalled almost exactly $100.

Considering that’d be about the cost of two, maybe three, professional gel manicures, I’m pretty sure this is one of those situations where you gotta spend money to save money. Dontcha love those scenarios?

Not that I’m going to give up my spa manicures (when you end up with nails this good, it’d just be wrong to give up), but I can get them less often. Plus, this DIY gel system also means that I could potentially try doing some nail art myself since I can use regular nail polish over top of the Kiss gel, and easily swipe it off with nail polish remover if I make a mistake for a do over.

I’m going to try this as soon as I get back home from traveling out west!

Next Walmart shopping excursion, I’m picking up products so I can get cuticles as healthy and perfect as Lindsay’s (You can discover her elaborate regimen here).

A ‘new’ must-stop shop?

So the first thing  I took note of was the super cute pair of mirrors  in Arren Williams’s luxe washroom. He told me they were from Walmart and let’s just say my jaw dropped. Yes,  Walmart.

Then about a month ago, I went to a press preview of the newly relaunched  George clothing line from Walmart. It’s not super fashion-forward, and doesn’t compare to my fave cheap & chic line Joe Fresh, but if you pick and choose you can find some gems in there–like their slim-fitting LBD, a handful of the accessories, and some practical basics (like their thin cotton long-sleeved Ts, perfect for layering)–for mixing and matching with your designer labels.

And then during TIFF, I checked out the Hard Candy lounge. Back in the day, I so coveted their polishes with the cute plastic rings, but my student budget didn’t allow for splurging on the then-upscale nail polish. Here’s the good news: the beauty line is now exclusive to the big-box giant and just launched in Canada’s Walmart locations, and–wait for it–not a single item is priced over $10.

Love the easy on the wallet pricing…but, yes, there’s a “but”. I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m big on pretty packaging, and some of the Hard Candy packaging does veer a little too Ed Hardy-esque for my taste (flames and other garishness). And at a quick glance, there is a whole lotta glitter going on in this collection. But I do quite love the shadows–Powder Keg Loose Shadow in Groupie (a nice champagne shade) in particular–and I’ve still got a slew of other products still to test out (it’s a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it :).

Suffice to say, next time I’m in the ‘burbs, I’ll be hitting up the Walmart.
