Fitness Swellness: Walking equal to running

20130408-212039.jpg
Great news for those of you who prefer walking to running: Walking moderately intensely gives you comparable health benefits as running vigorously says a six-year study when it comes to reducing your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

(And while I know there are surely better walking shoes out there, ones designed for walking specifically, than these Nike Dunks, these are the sneaks I’m coveting and what I’d wear to walk to meetings and events. Cute, right?)

Walk on

I walk at least 75 percent of the time lately to get where I need to go. Not just for the exercise (though Harley Pasternak says it’s a key step to staying in shape), but also to save $ and because I have very little patience for the unreliable transit system here in Toronto. (You may have read the occasional rant-y tweet from me about streetcar breakdowns…).

And a new study from the World Health Organization has figured out that short stints on foot rather than by car or motorbike would avoid the death of 108 men and 79 women a year in Catalonia, Spain, alone.

Walking FTW.

Find yourself some new workout music

Need new tunes to work out to? If you’re a runner, cyclist or walker, jog.fm helps you find just the right music for your pace. “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence + The Machine is best for a 6:17/km pace, for example.

(Interestingly, one of my Nike+ Powersongs, “Stronger” by Kanye West is for a 6:58/km pace and I’m (ahem) way faster than that.)

(The Sennheiser OMX70 earphones above were my fave running earphones, btw, until my bad cat–the one who eats just about anything (ie. not the one that insists on organic catnip)–chewed them up).
