If you like fancy schmancy doughnuts, make your way over to Glory Hole Doughnuts. The cute doughnut shop just opened up this past weekend in Parkdale. I popped in on the first day and they had only two flavours left (it was close to the end of the day): banana cream pie and lemon meringue. I opted for the banana cream pie ($4.20). It’s the kind of doughnut you need to be alone to eat — it’s ginormous so it’s a bit messy — alas, the only seating is at the front window where everyone on the streetcar can watch as you get whipped cream on your nose as you bite into the oversized sweets.
The doughnut was good — you’d have to be a fan of whipped cream, for sure, except it was much too large — the one doughnut easily could’ve been three servings for me. It’s a pretty darn decadent doughnut — I don’t tend to feel guilty about treats I have, but even this made me feel a bit bad (I was relieved I’d run that morning and had a long training run the next day!). Also, there was no saving any leftovers (or taking one of the lemon meringue to go) as single doughnuts are served in an open cardboard boat (no way for me to trek by foot with that!).
I’ll just have to stroll on back to try other flavours then…

If you’re trying to lose weight, here’s some good news if you have a sweet tooth: having dessert with your balanced 600-calorie breakfast (one that includes carbs and protein) will help you lose weight in the longterm says a study published in Steroids. In the morning, your metabolism is most active, plus you have the entire day to burn off the extra calories.
Sweet! (pun intended)
So have that cookie after your omelette and whole-grain toast rather than after dinner or depriving yourself of cake and such altogether.
I know I’ll be feeling way less guilty about the Belgian waffles I always order as a sweet finish to breakfast at Le Petit Dejeuner in Toronto. (Have you tried them? They are light as air — in fact, they’re the only waffles I love).

I’ve had a major hankering for Purdy’s Himalayan Pink Salt Caramels lately. Major. As in I’ve spent too much time pondering “How soon can I get myself over to a shop to get me a box?” (It’s been way too long that these have not been in my life).
But more often than not, I’m a savoury type of girl. Potato chips and me are BFFs. Which has me wondering if that’s a sign I’m an unhelpful grouch, based on this new research:
Sweet tooths have sweeter dispositions, says a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. They are more likely to volunteer to help someone and are more agreeable.
Can’t help what my tastebuds like, so I’ll just get on with my salty sourpuss self then I guess
