Sun and sand in your schedule? Just some of my essentials for a beach getaway:
- Cute cheap-and-chic bikini. So many inexpensive options if you can get away with a string bikini style from shops including Asos (like the one pictured here), Walmart (I have a few from this big box store — you can get one for $12!) and Topshop.
- Sunscreen. My routine: use an SPF moisturizer (Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration has a lovely coconutty scent and provides great hydration) post-morning shower, and then I throw a continuous spray sunscreen into my beach tote for quick reapplications throughout the day.
- Flip flops. Just picked up new Havaianas (they truly do feel better on your feet than the cheaper flip flops on the market), but I’m coveting these ones, too.
- iPad. Yes, I’ve been scolded to get offline when on vacay…but I think I’d just be more anxious. (OK, perhaps it’s time for another digital detox to relearn a few things!)
Still in the planning stages for your vacay? I know I’m always planning my next trip! Be sure to check out the four incredible Caribbean boutique properties featured over on ElleCanada.com. (If you’ve been following me on Instagram or Twitter over the last few months and were wondering what lovely locales I was at, you’ll find your answer in the article.) I still dream of being back at any one of these destinations on a daily basis! Can you blame me? Check out this breathtaking view…

Good news for you beauty addicts: Amazon.ca has added beauty and health stores to their site. Now, you can peruse more than 80,000 beauty and health products while you’re putting in your order for books or DVDs.
With a $100 Amazon gift card in my wallet (a gift from Amazon.ca — thanks!) I checked out the new shops…and while I planned on sticking to practical staples such as vitamin D and calcium supplements, I’m mighty tempted by all of the fantastic beauty brands in the store: Bobbi Brown, YSL, Dermalogica, Burt’s Bees, Aveda, Clarisonic, Shu Uemura, and too many more to name. These four items here are on my not-so-short list:
What’s on the top of your beauty and health shopping list?

The Discovery Channel’s got Shark Week; well, I bring you Sweat Week — a week of posts on surviving the heat waves this summer.
I sweat a lot. Think drippy. Drenched. Doused in perspiration. YUCK. I once popped into a shop after a run and the cashier asked me if it was raining, Um, no, that’s just how much I perspire when I run, lady, thanks for noticing.
So I’m excited about Neutrogena Wet Guard Sunscreen. It’s mostly being promoted for kids, it seems to me anyhow, as you can apply it to wet skin and the sunscreen can break through moisture. The technology involves a special blend of emollients and polymers that cut through water on the skin, allowing the UV filters to set up on your skin quickly, providing the same waterproof sunscreen protection as when applied on dry skin.
So when the kiddies are running out of the pool, you can apply it on them in a jiffy before they run off to play some more.
But it’s ideal for sweaty folks like me who can now reapply it asap (making a lovely melange of sweat and sunscreen on my skin, yummy! But hey, what matters most is that I’m not getting burned, right?).
