Beauty Swellness: Elmwood Spa Holiday Glow GIVEAWAY

Front Entrance 72dpi_RGB

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED FOR ENTRIES. Congratulations to Jennifer K., the winner of the Elmwood Spa Holiday Glow package! (Jennifer, check your email for more details about your prize, enjoy!)

Are you making a list and checking it twice? The past few years, I feel like I’m buying fewer gifts and choosing instead to give either something homemade (such as an addictive caramel popcorn that I make) or by taking someone out to dinner or to an amusement park, for example. And research shows that experiences, such as vacations, provide more enduring happiness than material purchases.

Which is why I think a gift card to the spa is a fantastic gift idea for the person in your life who could use a little me-time but rarely gets to indulge in it. Elmwood Spa (one of the first spas I ever went to in Toronto so it holds a special place in my memories) has several spa packages that would make a lovely gift for someone on your list. You could make it even more special by, say, offering your babysitting services so that your bestie doesn’t have to worry about finding someone to watch the littles. Or, even better, give your friend a gift card, and invest in the same package for yourself so that you can go together and decompress and spend some quality time together. Surely this will be more memorable than a pair of pyjamas, wouldn’t you agree?

To make your shopping a little easier, I’ve got one sweet giveaway (that you can choose to either give to a loved one or keep for yourself!). Enter to win one Elmwood Spa gift card for a Holiday Glow package (valued at $225). The Holiday Glow package includes one 50-minute Swedish massage, ElmLine Essential Facial, three-course lunch at the Terrace Restaurant, and water therapies in the spa’s pool, whirlpool and steam room.

Beauty Swellness: It’s Beautylicious time again in Bloor-Yorkville

Pure + Simple products

It’s that time of year again — Bloor-Yorkville’s Beautylicious is taking place October 23 until November 2, 2014. Not familiar with it? More than 60 spas, salons, skin, health and wellness businesses in  the Bloor-Yorkville hood take part and during the event, you can book treatments at prix fix prices (at $30, $50, $75 or $125).

I got to test out (again) one of my faves in advance of Beautylicious — the facial at Pure + Simple. I swear it is one of the most relaxing facials I’ve ever had — try to see Shari Hodgins if you go, she can work some magic with your skin (I left with a glowing complexion and even though my stress is at an all-time high, I was able to relax and let go of some of the anxiety I have about the Chicago Marathon I ran on Sunday). Above are the products she used on my skin (my masque was a combination of three masques to help prepare my skin to take on the colder weather here for the fall season), but the skin experts at Pure + Simple will customize according to your skin’s needs, obvi.

I’d get booking if I were you — I’m sure appointments for treatments such as the facial at Pure + Simple and mud facials, enzyme facial treatments, and haircuts and more in the hood’s top beauty spots are filling up fast.

Beautylicious runs Oct. 23 to Nov. 2. You can find more details on the business and services available during the event here.

Here’s the rub

Photo: Anna Lisa Sang

I”m not sure why, but when I got the invite to check out Red Door’s new foot massage treatment I wasn’t that excited. I love massages and try to get one every few months, and while I thought a foot rub would be perfectly nice, I just didn’t really get the point.

But after a 20-minute sneak peak into what the spa’s 45-min treatment consists of, you can call me a believer.

It is positively heavenly to have your tired calves and feet being the entire focus, and the spa’s airy space is such a tranquil escape from the city–in fact I had to be asked a few times to vacate my treatment chair as I just wanted to stay parked right there forever and never put on a pair of heels ever, ever again.

I just might have to cheat on my Alfred. (No, never. I just have to carve out a bigger massage therapy budget so I can indulge in this $55 foot treatment).

Available at Red Door (which goes by the name Che Bella Spa during daytime hours), 10 Castle Knock Rd. in Toronto on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings only.
