Travel Swellness: Winter is wonderful in the U.P.

Eben Ice Caves

With the huge snowfall in Toronto yesterday (right after spring-like weather the day prior) and this morning’s bitterly cold temperature of -29C, it’s hard not to have a major dislike for winter right about now. Well, truth be told, it’s been hard to not hate winter for the past weeks now given how difficult it’s been.

When I start having these dark, angry thoughts about winter, though, I try to remind myself of how winter is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. If you recall, I visited the U.P. a few weeks ago. They get more snow there than Toronto, and it’s cold, but there winter is embraced. You can go dog sledding (just about one of the most amazing things I’ve ever had the opp to do — and I’m lucky enough to have done lots of pretty cool things including chimp tracking in Rwanda to hot air ballooning in Arizona); ice fishing; snowmobiling; exploring fantastical ice caves; and more. They even hold a snowboarding competition right in downtown Marquette on one of the steep streets.

Those winter wonders, of course, aren’t available right here in dreary, slushy, and insanely cold Toronto. But still, visiting the U.P. is a good refresher than winter can be amazing.

For more on what to see, do and, of course, eat (you know me!) in the U.P., be sure to check out my article on AmongMen.

Travel Swellness: Moving on “U.P.”

Marquette Michigan

I’m packing all of my warmest clothes right now. Pretty much the items from my closet that have been in heavy rotation this crazy winter. That’s because where I’m about to go on is even colder than Toronto right now. That’s right — colder.

Dog sledding, though.

I’m going dog sledding! That will make it all worth it, I’m sure.  So stoked, have never tried it, plus I get to see the UP200 sled dog race — that’s because I’m heading to the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan for the next few days to try all sorts of winter activities.

I’ll share my article once it’s published!

Travel Swellness: Away to Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor photo VisitAnnArbor.org

Next stop: Ann Arbor! I hear there’s a great food scene there, so I’m super stoked to explore over the next few days.

It’s my first visit (first time to Michigan, actually), but I totally used to own a University of Michigan T-shirt — tried to dig up that photo from me back in CEGEP for a little #tbt action but can’t seem to find it.

Will explore and report back in a travel story that I’ll be sure to let you know about — in the meanwhile, follow me on Instagram as I’ll be posting there this week. I’m @healthandswellness on Instagram.
