Luxury goods help repair self-esteem

So I’m pretty darn certain that what this study is telling me is that if I don’t do as well as I’m hoping in my upcoming half-marathon, that I have a good reason to buy myself a designer handbag:

When your ego is threatened, you’re more likely to spend more on a luxury purchase and to charge it on a credit card. Two studies were conducted involving a computer test, and participants who were told their test results revealed them to be not too bright, those people were more willing to splurge and use plastic. (you can get the full deets in the link above).

But the finding that caught my interest most, and this is a direct quote:

“Luxury items are especially effective at reassuring us of our value.”

See? What’d I tell ya? Maybe I won’t try so hard in my race after all… :)

We’ll find a way to be happy

I like these findings soon to be published in Psychological Science: Seems that when something positive happens to us–even if it’s not the best outcome we were hoping for–we’ll still find a way to be happy.

The article refers to getting a great job offer, but the offer doesn’t include that fourth week of vacation, for example. I immediately thought of the Foley and Corinna purse I scored on sale, only it wasn’t the exact colour I wanted. (I can relate anything back to shopping, I tell ya!)

The researchers found that we’ll initially be disappointed, but will come around to being happy. It’s in our nature to think of things in the best possible light, so we start start thinking of the absolute value and rationalize our way to happiness.

Satchel shopping

A recent obsession of mine: adding a satchel to my handbag collection (sparked in part thanks to this look above from Proenza Schouler).

So I’m a bit giddy about snapping up this one here from Banana Republic today in a soft chestnut brown shade (it’s $310 in Canada, but scored 30 percent off thanks to the discount going on this weekend only–it goes without saying that you should get yourself in store Sunday to take advantage of the sale).
