Have you been experiencing an inexplicable urge to go to the Eaton Centre since Thursday, beauty lovers?
Well, that’s just the mothership beckoning: the new enhanced Beauty Boutique from Shoppers Drug Mart just opened.
The 4,000 square-foot space sells 21 prestige brands, including Chanel (yes, Chanel — this makes SDM the only drugstore in the world to sell Chanel cosmetics). There are whole sections devoted solely to fragrance and skincare — so amply stocked, your heart will go racing (thankfully, you can conveniently head into SDM for something to help with that
The boutique was designed with the idea of a gift box that one unwraps; admittedly I did not pick up on this when I previewed the store a week ago, I was simply too distracted by the Benefit, Clarisonic, and Vichy, oh my!
Men, you aren’t left out; there’s a whole nine feet of wall space dedicated to you: this is where your Clinique, Lab Series and more, is to be found.
Kinda need to rethink the term “drugstore makeup” when such luxe brands are carried in such a swanky setting, n’est-ce pas?

Do you wonder if you’re wearing the right colour of foundation? I know I do — and that’s even when doing what you should when buying it (apply about two different shades closest to your skintone in the store and it should blend right in (and be sure to look at it in natural light if possible), but with the array of shades and brands and options, the process can leave you feeling a bit uncertain.
Not the case at Sephora. Launching at all Sephora locations in Canada in August is Sephora + Pantone IQ, which greatly simplifies the process. Here’s how it works:
At Sephora, use the specially designed tool (it’s called Capsure) and take a scan in three areas of your face. You’ll want to make sure to not do anything the day you use the Capsure that’ll affect your skin tone, such as exercise a half hour prior to this, or to be guzzling caffeine that day (this’ll dehydrate your skin and cause it to flush),
The Capsure then analyzes your scans and generates a Pantone SkinTone number for you.
Enter this Pantone SkinTone number into the iPad featuring Sephora’s Unversal SkinTone Library. The Library will then generate which precise foundations suit your skintone. You can then narrow your search of the ones that suit your skintone based on factors such as coverage, formulation or skin type, to name just a few.
I had a chance to try it out recently at Sephora with the help of Sephora Pro Adi Lando and the Universal SkinTone Library suggested six liquid foundations for me. I tested out both the Urban Decay and Hourglass recommedations in store, and opted for the medium coverage Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup and it’s pretty magical how well shade 6.0 blends into my skin. I actually find myself excited to apply it every day, to see how disappears; it’s practically a David Copperfield-level disappearing act. (guess I still have Vegas on the brain – is it weird I kinda wanna see his show there?).
Also, so you don’t forget your recommendations, be sure to email your Pantone SkinTone number and recos to yourself so you can keep it on file.
Neat, right? Head to Sephora to meet your matches!

Good news for you beauty addicts: Amazon.ca has added beauty and health stores to their site. Now, you can peruse more than 80,000 beauty and health products while you’re putting in your order for books or DVDs.
With a $100 Amazon gift card in my wallet (a gift from Amazon.ca — thanks!) I checked out the new shops…and while I planned on sticking to practical staples such as vitamin D and calcium supplements, I’m mighty tempted by all of the fantastic beauty brands in the store: Bobbi Brown, YSL, Dermalogica, Burt’s Bees, Aveda, Clarisonic, Shu Uemura, and too many more to name. These four items here are on my not-so-short list:
