Foodie Swellness: Boodles Gin

So I don’t normally care to break out my blender and shaker when it comes to enjoying a cocktail at home. But I received a very sophisticated looking bottle of Boodles Gin and one of the cocktail recipes sounded so fruity and tropical that I gave it a shot.

Gin & Gomme

2 oz Boodles Gin

3/4 oz pineapple juice

1/2 oz mango puree (blended chopped mango)

3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

Shake all ingredients thoroughly. Strain into a large rocks glass with ice. Top with a splash of soda and garnish with a sprig of fresh cilantro.

The cocktail was good but tbh I’ll probably only make it again if I have friends over. Too much fuss for making one cocktail for me. I’ll likely enjoy the Boodles simply in a G&T, which is, in fact, how they recommend drinking it (more simply, that is, but of course Boodle Gin works well if you want to get your mixology on!).

By the way, you can also win a private butler for a week from Boodles Gin. It’s open to Ontario, Alberta and B.C. residents, and you can enter here!

Foodie Swellness: Mad Jack’s new Ginger Flavoured Lager and Hard Root Beer

FullSizeRender (77)

So for the past while, I’ve been looking for a ready-made alcoholic bevvie that doesn’t taste like cough syrup (I find so many of the berry flavoured ones taste like so) and that’s easy to drink (too many harsh tasting vodka-based coolers).

I’m not a beer drinker (once in awhile at an event or, you know, back in my sorority days…) but I have come around to being a fan of ciders, but I only recently discovered Mad Jack. And to its original apple lager, the brand has just added two new flavours, which kinda fill the “need” for when you just want a pop, but alcoholic. I love all things ginger lately and so the Mad Jack Ginger Flavoured Lager is yummy and not too overly ginger-y (I’ve had ginger beers that burn because of the strong ginger flavour), and the Hard Root Beer? It’s actually made me like root beer (which is a soft drink I have never been too fond of).

I’m all for drinks that you can just pop open and enjoy (I’ll leave the muddling and shaking to the bartender to do!) and I know I will be picking up this trio this summer.

Stay tuned for more of my favourite summer drinks and cocktails on the blog!

Foodie Swellness: Wonderful Pistachios

The Super Bowl is on Sunday — go Broncos! (After my visits to Colorado in January, they’re “my team” now, haha). The Super Bowl is the one time a year I maybe watch football (not that I dislike football, I just haven’t followed in many years). And, hey, it’s an excuse for prime snacking, right? And there’s always that big halftime show.

I only just discovered there are flavoured pistachios from Wonderful Pistachios, what?! Sweet Chili and Salt & Pepper (and they also offer unsalted ones, which is great if you’re being careful about your salt intake). I love pistachios (one of my fave nuts, actually), plus since they have fewer calories than other nuts and provide minerals such as copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, selenium and magnesium, they make a healthy snack (that is if you can stick to a serving size, which, admittedly, I typically can’t stop at one serving…oops).

If you’re looking for snack ideas for game day, Wonderful Pistachios suggests pistachios (doy!), and galas apple wedges drizzled with honey, aged gouda, and ginger beer (hello, another one of my favourites!). You’ve got crunch and salt from the nuts, caramel=y richness from the cheese, which both go well with the sweet juiciness of the apples.

And as for a bevvie with booze, this cocktail recipe will appeal to those who like Caesars:

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. tomato juice
  • 1 spoon of wasabi paste
  • dashes of balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, horseradish, lemon juice and Tabasco

Add  all ingredients to the glass end of your shaker and fill to the top with ice. Shake until frost starts to collects on the brass end of your shaker. Pour directly into cocktail glass.

Ready for game day? Who are you cheering for??
