Is marathon running dangerous for your heart?
(Reebok RealFlex)
I’ll admit breathing a sigh of relief when reading this finding (even though I’ve talked to my doctor about my long-distance running before I set out to train):
Marathon running is not linked to a higher risk of cardiac arrest compared to other physical activities — in fact, the rate was the same or lower in comparison. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that most people who did suffer cardiac arrest had undiagnosed, pre-existing conditions. One researcher noted that its the wide media coverage that’s created the belief that long-distance running is linked to a high risk of cardiac arrest.
Stay informed — and eat healthier
A study published in the International Journal of Public Health has found that the more people are informed by mass media such as newspapers, TV and the internet, the more they stick to a healthy Mediterranean diet. (Remember that such mediums often gets a bad rap when it comes to your health – linked to being sedentary and unhealthy snacking in front of the screen).
So staying informed may lead to healthier diet.
All the more reason to keep reading Health & Swellness :)
Eat more fruits & veg, people!
Us Canadians aren’t doing so well when it comes to eating enough fruits and veggies, y’all.
In a Concordia University (my alma mater, woot woot!) study published in the Nutrition Journal adults aged 30 to 60 are not getting enough in their diets. But as a whole, Quebecers are consuming more f&v than the rest of us (maybe La Belle Province will be known for that now, more than being the only place Pepsi outsells Coke?…Nah, probably not).
(and, hey, I’m from Quebec — but I know I could be eating more roughage…didn’t inherit that, I guess, only the poutine-eating habit).
Other findings? Women eat more fruits and veg than men (5.4 x a day versus 4.5 x), which isn’t too surprising, I don’t think. But here’s an interesting one:
People with a weak social network eat less fruits and veg compared to those who have a strong social network.
What’s that all about? The study doesn’t say. But seems win-win, more friends and socializing and you eat healthier overall going hand in hand? Sounds like a plan.
Keep your eye on the prize
I’d been hemming and hawing about running my first marathon for awhile now (and likely would’ve run one in the fall, but work and travel got in the way). But I’m doing it. Yes m’aam. In fact, it’s one of my 2012 resolutions.
And one thing that’ll help me get through 16 long weeks of training? Keepin’ my eye on the prize — which in this case, may include making my Blue Crush dreams come true and going to surf camp.
(If you haven’t seen the movie, do — the way they shoot the waves is incredible, plus one of Kate’s “prizes” in the movie is a boy, who, fans of The Vampire Diaries may be interested to know, is played by the dude who’s now Alaric on TVD).
For other ways I — and you, too — can stick to your resolutions, check out my post here on the Schick Quattro for Women Style Squad Facebook page. (And be sure to stay in the loop by “liking” the page while you’re at it!)
